I don't remember you can be forced such restrictions unless you join a domain?
Or did you also install a VPN program?

Some of our customer use a CAG (Citrix Access Gateway) for remote access, and you can configure it to detect that the client has AV installed, the definitions are up to date, and windows is up to date also, as well as other security checks such as domain membership.

Bugger.

Not a UAC issue. Just had the same error again Sad
Not that it helps, but it deem seem odd that UAC would be the cause on a clean machine Wink

Somebody else suggested it: Have you tried to reproduce the error in safe mode?

Right click only in explorer? How about other applications using the shell (open/save dialogs, trash can etc)? Are you running different explorer windows as seperate processes?

Error reproducable in safe mode.

Trying DEP settings now - this forum post matches my issue VERY closely.

May I recommend some even more basics steps:
- If you have SP2 as an seperate patch: Re-download! If applying it as seperate update fails (=same error) consider a slipstream installation. Better yet: If somebody can borrow you a Vista64SP2.
- Load BIOS defaults.
- Can you rule out defective RAM?

I can of course try a re-install of SP2.

Noticed that errors crept in from July, but no software installed at that time except Office 2007 (!).

My RAM continues to pass 8-9 hours of Orthos prime number testing, not to mention some of the other memtest tools that I've used. CPU temps and system temps are good... around 55c under load after several hours of prime 95 testing or orthos testing. No errors or failures when I stress the computer playing games for several hours on end.

Given that I get no other artifacts in any other software, I'm not yet convinced that its a hardware issue. I say this as it seems strange that its always the same error in the same module... not a more general error.

I also saw this error under WIndows 7 when I tested the beta out several months ago. I dismissed that as pre-release OS code, but have seen it under Visa 64 bit as well. Its *very* intermitent, sometimes after 5 mins of use other days I don't see the error and other days its a possitive haunting (same error when I right click on the recyle bin - error repeats over and over, each time explorer recovers, then fails again).

One thing to note, is that when explorer DOES fail and restart, I get similar errors in the admin tools like event viewer. Sad

True enough, but since a dll is simply a library of functions there remain the question if the dll itself is defective (which caused me to suggest to redownload or test a different media) or the calls to the dll are containing incorrect parameters.
From what little I have read I'm under the impression that this dll handles a lot of different system functions. I have read reports from very different causes for that kind of error.

If you're up for it try running SFC - system file checker. Go to command promt (as admin) and run: sfc /scannow (I don't honestly know if you've done this already or not)

This will report if any system files are out of place compared to certain backup locations so it is not perfect.

If you reinstall this is a rather neat way to get integrated Service Packs + all latest patches + .NET updates: http://download.wsusoffline.net/ - can create a ISO for running the patches off. Slipstreaming is even better of course.

Oh, and you should for sure run Memtest+ (4.00) overnight for a few nights if possible. You never know...

What else would I do if I saw this error? Probably reinstall (or upgrade to Windows 7 - the reaction time is by far worth it), but it's a hassle if you have a ton of games. Might be worth checking the HDD for errors, Hirens CD has some good tools for that, although it's illegal Wink

memtest is overkill, value ram fails the higher tests consistently. Yet Its still perfectly usable.

It's still worth checking, and who knows what RAM he has? He also said he'd already run it, but I wasn't sure what version, always worth checking again.

I download and ran the latest memtest version, the one that requires a reboot while the test kicks off in a "dos" like mode. Passed fine.

I have 8GB DDR2 800Mhz ram (OCZ branded)

how many passes? 1 full pass takes forever...
Orthos does'nt put much stress on RAM tbh.. nor does prime.. it stresses it a fair bit, but not enough to make a serious fail more than TF2 would
I doubt faulty ram would cause this though
