Windows Explorer crashes (not fatal takedown of O/S, just annoying restart of explorer over and over).

Event log message as follows:
Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e02a1e, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e0421d, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset 0x00000000000aef37, process id 0x944, application start time 0x01ca611f139c5f40.

Very commonly happens when right clicking on folders / files and the recycle bin (mostly recycle bin). I am using UAC btw.

Can't get any useful info, also saw this under Win 7 64 Ultimate (the trial version ages ago). Seen this problem since SP2 for Vista released.

Windows Explorer fails and automatically restarts.. right click ... problem repeats itself. After 6 or 7 times, all seems well. No other unusual activities, antivirus scan all clear and no spurious software.

Have done a clean Vista 64 install on a separate hard disk, no software other than operating system. Goes tits up in the same way after Vista SP2 is applied.

Any ideas?

Right click you say?

To the brain-o-tron machine!

You need to go and disable everything that adds itself as a right-click option. There are a few ways to do this, but off the top of my head none of them easy.

Might as well look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers first... (quick google search to find it). Might be trying to load something bad (or corrupt!) there...

Oh, do a disk check of course. Never know what NTFS gets up to sometimes.

You should also try safe mode - does it crash then?

There are other things activated on right click - certain folders and programs and things activate certain new menu entries. Explorer also checks the folder sometimes for something (eg; the folder type). Try resetting the folder settings of everything, try turning off folder tips, try different folders to see which it crashes on more...

Odd though. Sounds like "one of those windows things" which are insanely hard to track down. Too much of explorer (and associated files) are tied to the kernel and filesystem meaning BSOD's!

Oh, finally; Thought of upgrading to Windows 7? (not the release candidate mind you) Tongue

Certain it's a completely clean install? I'd expect this issue is due to poor context handling by a shell extension.
Is it only after SP2 was installed?

Anway, try installing ShellExView ( http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html ) and use that to disable non microsoft entries one by one.

Edit...damn you FD!

The Vista install on my 2nd hard disk was absolutely clean. Drivers and operating system - that's it. No utilities, office apps or games (have had two different antivirus products in two clean installs with same error).

*Definitely after SP2 install* - event logs clearly show errors AFTER SP2 as the most recent major update, however, there are so many updates that I can't categorically say this.

Have disabled UAC for a while.. see if that helps. Will check out DEP as I recall an error on that ages ago...

As for context menu, yes I agree it could be possible / likely as well.

Thanks for the ideas guys Wink

PS. This is not a BSOD - just the repeated failure and automatic restart of Windows Explorer "Windows explorer has crashed and is restarting..." kind of messages Wink

This is what I'd do to help diagnose:-

Download all latest drivers, and the admin install pack of SP2.
Re-install OS (SET TO NOT AUTO UPDATE, DO NOT INSTALL SP2)
Install Drivers

Test

If fine Install Admin SP2 (DO NOT AUTO UPDATE)

Test

Thats very odd!?!

There must be a process running under your account needing admin privileges... but UAC is unable to process its call....

Sounds like somat fishy on your machine imo

I'm pretty sure I'm good in terms of malware / virus etc.

Scanned extensively and never been out of date in terms of updates. I also don't install lots of 3rd party apps etc.

The fact that I switched to a second hard drive, erased it, did a vista install from DVD (without my current hard drive powered up) and got the same error might hint at an MS issue maybe.. the second install was just to see if I got the same error from a basic, clean install.

Ditto, especially antivirus / antimalware, they like to add things to context menus.

Since this last error earlier today, I have done yet another clean install - nothing added but drivers (freshly downloaded).

Had to do antivirus (Avira), can't run without it for my work VPN.

Will report back again if I see the error.

I don't remember you can be forced such restrictions unless you join a domain?
Or did you also install a VPN program?

So you also installed a VPN program?
Nope, I use Vista VPN connectivity.

My work domain CAN enforce the antivirus rule if I were do download and use specific VPN client software (which I have not).  An example is Juniper networks software.

However, I have agreed to maintain antivirus software prior to using the VPN.
