should i get a gtx275 or an ATI 5850?

this will be going in my i7 build with the following specs in breif:

i7 920 d0
foxconn blood rage mobo
tri channel ddr3 1600

i only have a 9500gt at the moment. i want to get the new one as a tie me over card until all the dx 11 stuff is out. so in a few months this card will be going

yeah you see why i want ot upgrade now. not had an ati card for a long time though so im a little apprehensive the last 2 i had were dismal and caused more crashes than anything else. my pc's have been way more stable on nvidia

Well for any given point in time (x) there are two options.

a) you buy the currently best thing there is (would be the Ati 5870, but 5850 is much better at price/performance value). Then two weeks later (point in time (y)) there is a better thing or the thing you bought get significantly cheaper. You're mad. Tough luck.

b) you buy a last generation card for $cheap.00 and wait for (y) where you can buy a pretty good thing for cheaper than at (x)

For a) it would be the Ati 5850, for b) it would be the 275, though it would be a bit too much overkill, it's a pretty good card and will stay like that for a long while untill we really see what DX11 is all about, maybe the GT 260 is for you? Would be a bit cheaper but still much faster than your old card.

I'd say if you want to stick with Nvidia, get 260 and upgrade when Nvidia gets the DX11 chips out there. The 260 will help you waiting just fine - your budget, though. I have the 4850x2 from Ati and it DOES crash from time to time on Win 7 RC, but I actually blame Crossfire for that, not the card, as I didn't have any problems with my previous Ati card (9800 pro)

lol when I built my PC couple of years back I went for option A... Spent over £400 on an 8800 ultra, mind you the 8 series had an outstanding run at the top of the pile, so I was lucky to have my moneys worth

Yeah, nothing wrong with A, I usually go with that option with some upgrade possibilities 1-2 years later on. It's just there is always the next best thing around the corner, so you'll always end up with "obsolete" hardware after a couple of months. Doesn't mean it runs like shit, though.

Yup, it's all about how long you expect it to last for. In the last 4 years I've had 2 graphics cards. X1950 which I then upgraded to a 4850. I probably won't be able to afford to upgrade that now until after easter now.

5850.. but seriously, why order todat? wait a month or so, the GXT300 series will be here and youll have more choice

I think buying first gen of a new DX is a bit of a waste of time, because all that'll happen is that it won't be able to run DX11 games that well.

Plus what Chaos said. It's what I'm doing, but I've got a slightly faster card than you to wait with.

Is GTX300 really that close? From what I've read about it, it doesn't look like it will appear sooner than end of Q3/2010? What there will be really soon will be the Ati 59xx series (which apparently are all x2 type of card, much faster, but technically not really superior to the 58xx series).

In any case, waiting will always give you better products at cheaper prices, but if you feel 9500 cannot keep up with your new rig - I'd say GT 260 will be enough to play pretty much anything for at least the next 6 months. I don't know what resolution you play in, though.

well as long as its under £200 gbp i get it for free through work. so i just want the best i can get in that budget then in a few months when all the new dx 11 cards are out. ill get the creme de la crem of that bacth and stick with it. aggain it will be free and ill have much bigger budget by then.

so for under 200 - vat what should i got for.

note: when i upgrade again in a few month ill be giving this card to a mate.
