All the 32-bit stuff should be OK, don't knock yourself out waiting for 64bit everything... it will get there eventually...

Hahahahahahaahahah! HAHAHAHA! AHAHAH!

Hohohoooho..

Oooh, woooh, good one there Junta. Wait for Adobe to do a 64 bit version, hohoho, good one, funniest thing I've read today Wink

Explorer does work better (give or take, I too miss the status bar), given I have an SSD though it didn't hang at least.

Okay, Windows Explorer revisited:
What exactly is this bloody green bar in the adress bar and why does it often take ages (in larger folders) to sort files by date?

I installed the upgrade edition of pro (student deal) on my laptop the other day, worked nicely. Downloaded it to my desktop, ran the setup, had it do a clean install, it moved vista neatly out of the way (and left me with the same OS choice screen as ever), and works great. The install size of this version is only 2.7 Gb so nice and small. Also I can finally play videos on my laptop. Before playing any xvid clip would lock up the machine, now at worst I get a 5 second stutter (this happened 4 times watching a 50 minute show full screen). The processor is a puny 600 MHz so fairly impressive that it works that well now.

If I recall correctly, the green bar is when it's loading/working on something - I've only ever seen it occasionally when dealing with network drives.
I've just had a quick play around on my laptop (Win7, crappy 5400 rpm hard drive) and the biggest folder i can think of (Windows\System32) with 2736 items loaded and sorted by date instantly - maybe there is something wrong with your setup?

Try running this: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html and post the results. Open up task manager and keep an eye on cpu usage when you're using explorer too.
Possibly also an antivirus thing, if you're running one Try disabling it and see if it makes a difference.

Well the only thing that is slightly irritating for me is that the Razor software claim that I don't have a Razor mouse. Still works, just can't use the system trya icon thingy to tinker with it. Hay ho Smiley

Nope, don't think it's performance related.
From what little I've read so far my guess is that windows is in some way prefetching multimedia files for preview. I have one folder with more than 7000 images and videos (various stuff collected over time and still waiting to be sorted out) where this really has some impact.

You can turn on/off that icon creation - check the options for explorer, it's something like "Always use icons instead of generated thumbnails" or somesuch. There might be another option in advanced performance options too.

or maybe make better use of folders, 7000 files in any folder is bad, 7000 images and videos is begging for sorting. also pron? we know it is

Not helping, also on occasion I want the thumbnails.

With all due respect: That's BS.
I didn't have such problems in XP. Also alternative file managers handle such large folders well in Win7. It's a specific problem with the shell.

That might be a clue. Will check that out.

Well, as it says, it appears to be thumbnail creation hanging, hmm...

Without more information Teatime, I can't provide any help. I also didn't even say what advanced performance option it was, you sure you really checked them out properly?

I have to test this further, but I'm hoping I've found the problem:
In the properties for that folder the optimization was set to "Videos" (apparently determined by Win7 automatically be the majority of files). Changing that to "General" has improved access and sorting for the moment. Will have to see if that improvement lasts.

I meant from an organisation point of view 7000 files is bad (although reading back you said you hadn't got round to sorting yet). On my laptop since i've been playing with it even small folders it takes an age to process generating the thumbnails and such (slow processor). Surprisingly slow compared to the rest of the OS.

Ah right, videos, that explains it.
This is exactly the kind of thing that is really fast on an SSD Tongue /BrokenRecord

It's because Win7 (and vista) scan the videos to pull metadata like the video length and resolution, and generate thumbnails. It should be caching all that metadata and thumbnails though and be a lot faster on the second time you open the folder (once it's finished scanning them all)
Have you turned off the indexing service or something?
