Just looked at how much it'd set me back to max out my RAM. A bit scary in that prices have gone up about £25 since June. Looks like more overtime is in order. Hay ho.

Yeah, I have free win7 when I want it through MSDN... shame about the way it makes you use a client thing for downloading it though. I'll upgrade at some point when I have free time (read: Christmas)

Rippy, you can always do what I plan to do:
Create a dualboot system with Win7 and XP (or Vista). AFAIK Win7 will offer to integrate existing OS into the bootmanager.
That leaves you with a working system to fall back on and you have still all your old data available (even that stuff in "Users" or "Program Files" one so easily forgets to backup. All you need is a separate partition (if necessary you can do that before install with diskpart). Don't worry about drive letters, the system partition holding Win7 will always be C automatically.

BTW: While it's unlikely that XP-drivers will be usable it's apparently not impossible, as I've just learned from an article.
Perhaps another reason to keep an old XP partition alive for reference.
I'm kinda hoping to get my scanner working under Win7 that way ...

If your existing OS is on C and you install Win7 as a duel boot, yes its fine but it will not take the C drive.  Further more, you will need to edit your boot files to make Win7 the primary load option otherwise your original OS will always boot unless you manually select it in POST Wink

Why bother trying to hack the XP drivers to work?
Vista drivers work fine Wink and if your rig has hardware that does not have Vista drivers by now then I'd recommend upgrading / replacing rather than bodging drivers....

I've read that if you install Win7 on a partition which normally would not be C (which previously - to my knowledge - depended on the order set in BIOS) it will show as C in Win7.
Since I'll install Win7 on an empty partition (having XP on a different one) I'm hoping it will work as planned.

Why bother trying to hack the XP drivers to work?
I expect everything to work, but I guess my scanner will be a problem. There are Vista drivers, but only for 32bit, not 64bit which I intend to use.
Chances are I won't get it working, but I will certainly try Wink

if your rig has hardware that does not have Vista drivers by now then I'd recommend upgrading / replacing rather than bodging drivers....
Why in a higher-entity-of your-choice's name should I buy a new scanner (which so far is working fine) without trying to get it working with older drivers???

XP drivers tend not to work on Vista/7 (different driver model), although I think some network cards do. As you say Tea, unlikely but good luck Smiley

Scanner drivers are definitely an issue - I have W64, a Canon and no compatible drivers. Can't be bothered trying to sort it and I'm too cheap to buy a new one.

have you submitted a support ticket with canon or raised anything with them?

I have a TC Electronics Konnect24D external sound card (for music making) and they didn't have 64bit drivers and hadn't even started them until around Jan..
I started a thread on their forum (there was one on a cubase forum but not on their own) asking people to raise hell with them and get them to make drivers and it took about 6 months but it worked Cheesy
Also, see if there are any beta driver tests.. they usually work fine for existing hardware (meaning you can do all the basic stuff you got the scanner/device for)
A big company like canon wont want to see unsatisfied customers or develop a rep for not making drivers...

Have you tried any Generic TWAIN drivers? sometimes works for scanners
