I know it's geeky, but I'm genuinly excited that in a weeks time Win7 is relieced in the UK.

I don't know about you but I'm already trying to plan out what to do. So far I've got a bit of a paranoid list going.

1)    Back up everything I can't afford to loose to DVD.

2)    Remember to download either IE or Firefox or Safari as Win7 doesn't come with IE, some Euro law.

2a) *Edit by Junta* Download and store the latest drivers for your all your kit

3)    Buy new hard drives and safly store old ones.

4)    Buy as much RAM as my motherboard will handle

5)    Brace myself for pain and suffering in the event of none of this working as I would hope.


Have I missed anything? I know I've got to go through the archives here to find the quick and painless way of re-installing TF2. I think it's just move folders around. Gonna have to try a similar stunt with WOW. I think I just about remember where the update files live.

I don't even know what I'm letting myself in for as I didn't even download the RC version of Win7. In my minds eye I have an image of a slicker version of Vista. I realy hope that weaning myself of Xp isn't going to be that bad

Actually they scrapped the Euro edition of Win7, Win7 comes with IE now but it asks you would you like to download a new browser (using IE to do it hint hint)

You dont specifically need new hard drives for win7 unless ur getting for another reason

Depends on version of Win7, if its x86 then 4GB, if its x64 then limits are version dependant:-
•Starter: 8GB
•Home Basic: 8GB
•Home Premium: 16GB
•Professional: 192GB
•Enterprise: 192GB
•Ultimate: 192GB

Not that I can think of. With a new system I'd be tempted to download games fresh rather than moving them around. Just get your CFG files

XP was good, Vista was OK, but troublesome if you wanted to use it for anything lol. I have 7 on dual boot, and all my Vista problems have dissappeared in 7...

I've also heard that some of the home versions will not allow you to create / join a domain (unlike Windows XP). This is of course more a business thing but will trip up some people who are into networks

Forgive me Rip, but I amended your steps to include "download latest drivers and store" - its always wise to have the newest ones for compatibility, especially if you've avoided Vista and your Win XP drives are a bit old. Windows 7 does seem to make a good job, but you can't avoid drivers for some things these days!

The most common editions of the operating system are Windows XP Home Edition, which is targeted at home users, and Windows XP Professional, which offers additional features such as support for Windows Server domains and two physical processors, and is targeted at power users, business and enterprise clients.

Driver situation is pretty good, I only needed to download the stuff for the advanced features of my g15. Headset, WLAN driver (which I had to grab from the chipset manufacturer because the card manufacturer didn't offer one for Vistax64), newest nvidia driver, even drivers to connect my mobile phone, everything got installed by itself or by drivers from windows update.

I suppose I was thinking that in the days of XP it was rather simple - two editions with the higher one giving the fuller functionality.

However, the various editions of Vista and Windows 7 are misleading I think - not clear what is in / not in some of the middle editions. I wouldn't be suprised if there were some surprising things missing in the professional version of Windows 7?

Been using Windows 7 dual booted on my PC and the laptop, seems to run very well, even on a crappy system.

I'll stick with the RC until Christmass at least. It still works fine and I will have to reinstall everything from scratch anyway, might as well wait for that as long as I can.

I'll only have to reinstall the system partition, like with XP, right?

Theres only actually 3 retail editions in EU, Home Premium, Pro and Ultimate. Enterprise you can't get, Home basic is developing markets only, and starter is OEM.

Pro and ultimate are the only editions with windows server domain joining, whatever that is.

Domain joining is basically for business use, unless its a nerd with a domain controller at home

Enterprise is available on volume license, so if you get a dodgy copy its more than likely this version

As I've said building a new PC for this, will probably try a RTM version of Windows 7 to test the drivers and config before installing the version I'll get in the mail.

It isn't that exciting for me except for being finally able to use a 64 bit processor and more RAM since I skipped vista. I mean, it's about as exciting as the Snow Leopard upgrade which I've still failed to purchase just yet

It'll hopefully do for games at least. Well, it really should do. Even pre-order price of £99 for the professional version (which is something like £150 now) is re-cocking-dickulous to pay.
