Well I'm happy to ignore all that hat stuff. Just more clutter to fill up my backpack day 3 up, you have to buy tickets if you want to play the new mode on official servers and get the mann vs machine rewards/items. nyeh. HEY GUYS DO YOU WANT A ROBOT HAT? WELL JUST PAY $0.99 each time you want to play and earn one. Also if you and your friends all buy $1.99 tickets on top of that you can get multiple hats! WHAT A DEAL. Also it only records what missions you do it you use a ticket. http://www.teamfortress.com/mvm/faq/Oh well. I'll just ignore it all then and carry on regardless unless it becomes important in some way.

In a way its a kind of cost shifting. Valve is perfectly happy to go along with the industry notion of free2play as long as some of their customers spend stupid amounts on the game. But I dunno can't we just go back to the old system where everyone pays a reasonable amount for the gaming experience. which incidentally would mean devs had to focus on better gameplay and not better hats. Free2play is ultimately a crap idea if developers have a monetary incentive to churn out tons of hats instead of doing anything useful with gameplay and ultimately the most empowered consumers and the ones they are likely to listen to are those buying tons of hats. TF2 was lucky to have a good gameplay experience to build on but SMNC in trying to create something similar and f2p has just trainwrecked their gameplay and stopped giving a shit because its better for them to just sell a few skins to the few people still playing. Some games that are f2p have obviously worked but there is strong financial pressure especially if the game loses popularity to just sell more hats.

With Steam Workshop Valve doesn't even need to focus on making hats either when they can get people to do it for them... and for a fraction of the expenditure on wages for 3D Modellers as well.

It just feels a bit cheap to hold off on this bit of information and then on the day the update hits all of the sudden they say theres content in this update you can only access if you pay for it. That just gave it a really bad taste for me. And lets not even go into that topic again how poor and ridiculous this game looks now, blergh. Screw Mann vs Machine, I want a 2008 mode that brings me back to the time when the game actually looked good and was fun to play

But the whole gamemode is free to play? If you want to also track your progress and gain rewards then you pay a fixed amount of $0.99 per mission. You only ever have to buy this once (it is only consumed once you complete a previously uncompleted mission). So I assume each tour is made up of 3 or 4 mission so you are talking about a total $4 (or two keys ) spend or similar for each new DLC as they release future ones. So as far as I can see they have released DLC both for free and for a fixed price and you can choose which version you want. The only way I can see people spending 'stupid amounts of money' is if you repeatedly play missions and keep buying Squad Surplus Vouchers in which case that is your choice and no different than buying keys etc.

Yes thats why it doesn't completely suck from a consumer point of view. But on the developer side its still financial pressure to make more hats. I just feel like the whole free2play paradigm is fundamentally going to be bad for gaming because a few developers will have the time money and creative integrity to make an amazing game for free (but even tf2 is starting to creak under the weight of hats and weird weapons) but most (as is already largely the case) will just make crap because they can and push everything towards being farmville. I think ultimately as a gamer everyone paying a fixed amount each ensures better quality than free2play.

I actually like that mode a lot. Fun hell surviving.
However, it actually takes a very VERY long time to join a server if you use their matchmaking stuff. Also what happened to the RED&BLUE VS GREY hype? Everybody is red...

For whatever reason you can only play with a ticket on an official server.

http://www.teamfortress.com/mvm/faq/Q: Do I need to buy anything to play Mann vs. Machine? No. You can play the game as much as you like on any non-Mann Co. server. All Missions are available for free, and all play time in Mann vs. Machine will count toward your standard timed loot drops.
In all honesty, if anybody has ever been on a Valve server. The amount of times the server lags/drops FPS is horrendously bad. And it isn't just me, I remember Dodgy, Jebus and Karthus had similar problems when we were on one of them one night. I'd like to see some WDG ones up -- private ones? Maybe two? - so the community doesn't have to wait so long for any official ones.

I assume there is currently a shortage of community servers as well, but thats likely to go away. But having to play on an official with a ticket probably wont improve much. You are getting a poorer service after having paid for a ticket.

Yes, the Valve servers are all Mann Up therefore need tickets...I think. Which probably will make the queues worse for people who aren't fussed and just want to play the game mode (which by all accounts is fun). Someone on UKCS was waiting 40 minutes for a free lobby. Some communities (HH - in there straight off )have already started passwording their free game servers which makes sense. I suggested putting the new mode on Server 1 before I realised properly what it was all about. Now we know more, why don't we put up some WDG ones for friends and community as Lefty suggests?

Seems you can direct connect to community servers running mvm which is cool. But that makes my ticket complaint worse. Not only do you have to use bad valve servers if you play, you also can't play if the item server chokes and dies and blocks matchmaking. Why are they offering a service that is worse than the free one?
