Buy an old Focus, you can get a good one for under £1k.  The £1200 to get a good car is rubbish, we've had more go wrong with our Citroen Picasso which cost us £6k than my Renault Megane that cost me £500.

You have to be prepared to wait for a good cheap car too.  Be very fussy about the condition but not the age, mileage or make.  Don't get anything that has problems.  And don't buy a Vauxhall Smiley (says me who is considering a Zafira)

I had a peugeot 105 that cost me £150, last me for a good year until I wrapped it around a lamp-post.

With some other cars in between I now have a 1998 Peugeot 106, 50,000 miles (when I bought it) which was £1200, and has nearly lasted me 2 years - passed 2 MOT's with no work and the only thing that's happened to it was a brake cylinder leak which cost about £140 to fix. If only the damned thing wasn't so slow, uncomfortable, had power steering and a clutch that wasn't as long as my arm it would be an awesome car Cheesy

I agree with Papa, you have to do research on the model of car, find out what goes wrong, which model is best to go for and how much the insurance and tax are.

If you can afford the insurance luxury cars tend to be a good cheap buy if nothing is broken.  I'd recommend a look at the last generation of VW Passats, specifically the 1.8 Turbo, 140mph+ and 35mpg, full of toys for 1k.

I'm forced to disagree with Milli on this point. There are no absolutes in automotives. You can have 2 identical cars next to each other, Initially make. German and Japanese cars are better built and last longer.
To prove Dave's point, I've had nothing but trouble with a VW and a Skoda, yet other family members have reliable cars of the *exact* same model Sad

Oh well. It's offical now.

A very nice fella turned up today with a lorry full of spanked cars with one space on it. He took away my little astra to go and get scrapped Sad

At least the evidence of my shame is no longer in my car park. Just an empty space as testiment to my shame Sad

Now it's time to save up and deside what to get next.

Golf GTI?

Honda HR-V?

Propper MINI?

Ford Focus?

Delorian?

Propper mini I guess you mean 'pre-bmw'.... in which case yes.  You will look imensley funny in one of those (imagines 'the train face' in a mini lol) and they are great fun to drive.

Delorians are cool but will cost more in repairs that your current car (if you can find one for sale?)....

As you do loads a miles, you gotta go for diesel.

I'd go for any of the following:-

Seat Leon TDI - 170bhp
Vauxhall Astra - 150bhp
Golf GT TDI - 170bhp.

Plus get it remapped, for about £300 for muchas performanceas increasesas..... (wheres the mexican come from??? lol)

example the Astra 1.9 150 bhp, we will remap to 200bhp + over 300lbft of torque. This will make it almost as quick as the astra vxr Wink but will do at least 45mpg Smiley

I did own a MINI once. In fact it was my first car. A bright inca yellow. I was the 14th owner in 16 years. I got through 2 engines, 3 clutches, the underside was a patch work of welded plates, the electrics were shafted and enventually 4 out of 6 wheel cylinders failed (all round drum breaks - emergancy stopping distance = 2 weeks writen warning).

I some times miss that car. Just because other MINI drivers would flash and wave at you. Also in the 4 years I had that car I only saw 3 other cars the same colour Smiley

They are monumentus fun.... My sis had a 1.3 mini mayfair and was a dream lol.... she could have sold it for more than she bought it for after a couple of years of ownership.... name 1 other cheap car that increases in value!!!!

We used to (occasionally still do) go to the national mini show.... Every car around the area is a mini and the flashing is constant lol

The draw back is that it's a 1.7 TD. It's about as refined and as cofatable as, oh I dunno, being dragged along on a cast iron tea tray behind some one doing the Fort William down hilll event.

love the reference - applauded. would it really be that rough as that track is something else. i felt like id done 12 round with tyson after 6 runs down it.

I'd go for a Golf GTi (or GT TDi), a 1.8 Focus Ghia or go nuts and get a Porsche 928 or early 90s BMW M5.  Don't get an old Mini if that is your only car and you have to drive on a motorway.

Second the Golf motion. Because I drive one myself, and the engine has run past its 250,000th km (~155,000+ mi for the imperically inclined), and if I feed it enough oil and gas will probably continue to do so for a long time...

But it's ultimately up to you, so pick a nice car for yourself. Smiley

My mate has a GT TDI 140, remapped for ~£300 (including handheld device to change maps whenever he wants) and he is currently running at 192 BHP....
Its now 'almost' as quick as my corsa vxr Wink

edit: one of the most known mappers is superchips, they want £400 for a remap :-

I cant remember where my mate had his done.

It's looking like a golf realy. HeX has one, and she even let me drive it once! Fantastic fun in a short space of time. And VW continue to impress me. I like the build quality you get with them. And as a geek, I love the engineering side to it. The applied logic to things. I've got a second cousin who has black GTI - Colour as a summer car. Needs a bit of work, roof lining is comming loose, there's a shitty after market imobaliser fittied to the centre counsil to disable the gear knob that realy needs to be replaced with a desent alarm. I wonder if I can perswade him to part company with it? Cheesy
