The loverly people of Co-Op value the car at £650

The persons of questionable heratige at Baylis Hays & Strange recon I need the following:

F bumper cover
N/S/F fog lamp
F grill complete
Bonnet
N/S/F wing
O/S/F wing
F mud flaps
O/S/F indicator
O/S/F headlamp
N/S/F headlamp
N/S/F indicator
Front pannel
N/s to F/S chasis and plate
Radiator + anti freeze
Bonnet catch

Add this all together and then add labour and VAT.

You get...

£2,148.72

I was in Cinderford when they rang me.

My response was...

"HOW FiretrUCKING MUCH!?"

I personaly feel that they are taking the piss. So I've taken my car back off them and told the insurance company I want another quote. They're sending out one of their own indipendant mechanics to assess the car and disscuss things with me.

Deep joy Smiley

scrap it and get a new one, spend the leftover cash on a new gaming rig.

(I was seriously considering going to auctions with a rented truck, buying a £5 car (won't drive itsself) and scraping it. (yes at auctions you still get cars that cheap, idiots).

You can seriously make money this way.

The thing is, I'm in a mixed position. On one hand I could scrap the car, reclaim as much of the road tax as possable and pocket the cash. The reason being is that I have access to a company car, and all it cost's me is 10p a mile for private use. The draw back is that it's a 1.7 TD. It's about as refined and as cofatable as, oh I dunno, being dragged along on a cast iron tea tray behind some one doing the Fort William down hilll event. My old astra with it's little 1.6 petrol was realy nice to drive. Ok, so there was no air con, the sterio still uses tapes and let's face it, sallons aren't sexy. But in coparison to the diesle? I'd rather drive the old car.

Along with the realy anoying belife that is now shaping in my mind of that any car I personaly own and then get to the point where I need to change the timing belt. Especialy with the fabled words from the mechanic of "You'd better change your water pump while we're at it", is the kiss of death. So in a desparate bid to break the non-existant jinx, I'd like to get the car back on the road again.

It seems to be there are certain guid lines with second hand cars. The main one seems to be never spend less than £1200 on a second hand car. A cheep car will end up costing you in spares & repairs to about that. It would also seem that unless your car is worth more than £4000, don't bother with fully comprihensive insurance. If a small knock can cost over two grand, then you might as well save some money up front.

All in all, I should count my blessings. No one was hurt [other than my pride]. Accidents do happen, you have insurance for a reason after all. And hopefully the other party I hit haven't had their car writen off, as all I think I did was break a couple of mounts on their rear bumper. But as they had a Vaxhall as well, then there is every chance some fuckwhit will have drummed up a stupidly high quite. Probably even claiming that they need new mud flapps as well.

Hay ho, nearly the weekend. And it's a weekend off. YAY! Let there pear cider! Cheesy

I just liked being able to get home after work and if I needed to go out anywhere I didn't have to do it in a work's car.

Buy an old Focus, you can get a good one for under £1k.  The £1200 to get a good car is rubbish, we've had more go wrong with our Citroen Picasso which cost us £6k than my Renault Megane that cost me £500.

You have to be prepared to wait for a good cheap car too.  Be very fussy about the condition but not the age, mileage or make.  Don't get anything that has problems.  And don't buy a Vauxhall Smiley (says me who is considering a Zafira)

Be very fussy about the condition but not the age, mileage or make.

I'm forced to disagree with Milli on this point. There are no absolutes in automotives. You can have 2 identical cars next to each other, one is excellent, the other a nail.
The condition is important but the other factors are just as important.

Initially make. German and Japanese cars are better built and last longer.

Age. The older it is, the more likely that components will need to be replaced, regardless of mileage. Service history and type of owners has an impact.  There is alot of rubber used in cars and it perishes over time. More quickly if they vehicle is left standing.

Mileage. Wear on running components increases with use and therefore the higher the mileage the more likely it is to need remidial woprk on running gear (clutch, gearbox, driveshafts) and engine. German and japenese engines are better built (a matter of automotive philosophy with these manufacturers) and will bear higher mileage before needing the remidial work.

Research the vehicle you looking to buy. Case in point, I've just replaced my Audi A4 for a Toyota Hilux Surf 4x4 for work. I wanted a 3.0TD but got a 2.4TD as a straight swap. The 2.4TD engine had issues with the cylinder head, making the engine unreliable at higher mileage. The one I bought had the head replaced 3 years ago. So it's done about 20K on a rebuilt engine so far.

Use the company car while you save up for a German or Japanese car Smiley I prefer Merc. as a German car or Honda as Japanese. I've owned both and spent little more than servicing and tyres on them, I owned the Merc. for 6 years and still own the Honda which I've had for about 3 (or is it 4). Smiley
