I fear no demo men except for ubered ones. Their crap is easily tidyied away with a rocket or two and most can't cope with you jumping over their heads and rocketing them from above. And placed sticky kills are just cheap

I witnessed 3 demos completely shutdown entire areas for about 30 minutes, by just stickying choke points and spamming randomly. Uber were only good to get out of the chokepoint, being blasted to hell, where the rest of the team finished you off. Those demos didn't really know what they were doing, just plastering stickies all over the place and spamming in your general direction. If those demos were actually good, I don't know what would happen. Now imagine rest of the team ALSO consinsting of demos.
An all soldiers team has enormous firepower, that much is true, but demo can shut down large areas while STILL being able to deal out damage at pretty much the same rate as a soldier does.
Like I said, I haven't see many good demos it's not as "easy" as soldiering, many people just spam or use their sticky launcher as a rocket launcher, but the demo is much more than that. There are more than enough people who could airshot you multiple times as demos. Just because you don't see the class utilized to its full potential often, doesn't mean the class sucks
Also, I don't see how utilizing one of the main abilities of your class is cheap? It's obviously your choice not to go where the stickies are or deal with them before you go there. Would you consider a rocket which hits someone who you weren't even aiming at in the face after 10 seconds of flight cheap, just because it's not a hitscan weapon (extreme example of course)?

Disagree on cheap. As a player you should check for stickies... I have to and the clever demo men find new places to put them (where you're not going to look naturally).

The only thing better than one demo, is more than one demo! How can they be made less effective by having less? Bloody hell their spam is lethal as it is, imagine 4 x 4 pipes coming over to the mid point on granary! The demo's gonna be there faster than the soldiers, he's gonna sticky the place up, he's gonna lock em down! Face it, if the demo gets there first, which he always does, he's going to win. This is why he is the uber class, he's got everything in the bag.
Also not fearing demomen is a mug's game. If you're stupid enough to walk towards a demoman who's good with his pipes, you're dead. Not to mention the fact he ganks soldiers at mid and long range with his no damage fall off pipes and stickies.
Not fearing the class with the highest damage output in the entire game will get you killed.
@Power: You've got it right.
EDIT: Concerning Stickies:
Yes, they are cheap. You can't really check for stickies if a demo is just hurling them near you, the ridiculous splash is going to gib you if you're trying to escape. I've played demo on WDG for a long time and I've never found it difficult to fight anyone but the rushing classes (Scout and Pyro) with stickies. At mid and long range, the demoman is king. KING.

Sticky launching isn't the same as sticky trap though, which is what Discordance talked about (unless I misunderstood?). I'm not very good at demo, infact I played him the least if I remember correctly, but even after my stat reset and only 2 hours of play with that class it holds my kill record and I usually only use grenades (as I'm trying to improve my aim).
If I go for a sentry as a demoman I usually just lob grenades on it (often from the cover, like dustbowl stage 2-2) and it goes down faster than planting and blowing up stickies. I don't really know what I'm doing as the demoman, though.

Of course on the common rubbish pub game a demo is pestered by those little nuisances like equally skilled snipers, pyros or spies which might prevent him from wearing his crown all the time.

If that is the case, why do competitive teams (usually) only use one?
Why not 4 demos, a scout and a medic?

Exactly, anything more than one demo equals spam and damage overkill, which is why the class limit was introduced.
Same thing with medic as with two medics healing 4 people it's kinda hard killing anyone.
And yeah, I never tried to understand the logic behind TF2 competitive side. I always thought the numbers just translated from CS times, where 5on5 and 6on6 was the usual rule. It doesn't make sense to me to cut off most of the available classes just to minimize the chance of something unexpected to happen.

there are quite a few corridors where you can't sticky check, the demo has put them in some annoying place that means when you can see them hes already started to detonate. round the blind side of corners or doors and such

Have a look in the video thread at some of the demoman frag films. I know that most of the kills/streaks are cherry picked and these are (usually) the highest level of players, but can you imagine that kind of killing power even x2 (let alone a whole team like has been suggested)? Like you said, soldiers and scouts would be almost completely made redundant and it would then become a game of "who can get to middle cap the quickest and therefor win the match".
As for the sticky traps being cheap kills, I hate them, they make me rage, but isn't that the whole point of the demoman? Area denial, laying traps and defending himself using the pipe launcher as his direct combat weapon.

Sticky traps make me feel stupid. But when you lay down three stickies behind some people who haven't noticed you yet, grab their attention with a few pipes and- BOOM!!! Man, that is a hella satisfying.
As for the demoman limit, Soldiers can't spam as well, their damage falloff is hilarious compared to the demo who has no falloff whatsoever. Repeat,
no falloff whatsoever
. Therefore too many demos means too much spam which bla bla bla /repeat
As for sticky traps (woops i missed the point) I agree. Sticky traps are really lame. You know what else is lame, double jump. The scout shouldn't be allowed to use his class-specific skill, that's just stupid, AMIRITE?
Complaining about sticky traps is ridiculous, unless you're on pubs ofc where anything goes. Your scouts should've called where their demo is, where they can expect traps to be and ofc before walking blissfully through any of the shutter gates you should check the ceiling where they are hidden by the shutters.
Sticky traps are as fair as rocket jumping, juggling and level 3 sentries.
