They'll probably include an app similar to the ActivePerl package manager which will fuck off to a repository and install whatever browser you choose (with a confirmation dialogue asking if you're sure you don't want IE followed by another dialogue box asking if you're really sure )

Anyone who goes on their web browser before installing a firewall and (if they want one) an AV scanner, is asking for trouble there is a need for a penstick well before any web-enabled app gets run!

Depends on the user Home users aren't really the target for hackers and as long as your sensible on where you browse (i.e. microsoft.com for updates) you should be fine without them to start with, obviously once your PC is up and running then yes security does matter

Also I've heard Microsoft will honour the half price offer (for win7 ) in the EU as long as you pre-order it Be aware apparantly there is NO UPGRADE available. You have to buy the full thing

So whats the driver situation with Win 7RC? What progs won't run on it? What probs have users found? and what were the solutions? What should I be downloading in advance before I start the reinstall?

All seemed to work pretty well here. No drivers for my scanner though (a cheapo Canon). Only program I've seen compatability issues with is Teamspeak Overlay on the last match, which doesn't support W7. Having said that I don't have a fancy sound card or anything particularly radical.

Vista drivers seem to work OK in most cases (if no W7 driver available) Specific versions of W7 have a built in Windows XP virtual machine (for compatibility). I've used virtual machines for software construction for years - they're pretty good for business apps. Can't see them being good (at present) for some of the older games you might like to play Microsoft doesn't do "cheaper" options for pre-ordering. Your only best bet is that voucher thing they do when you buy Vista.. you get a voucher that may enable a cheaper upgrade. If you're buying new then don't count on a cheaper OS just because you bought it earlier. The rush to buy Win7 may push the price up though!

As I pointed out somewhere else MS is doing a pre-order campaign here in Germany which will get you Win7 significantely cheaper. (49,99 instead of 119,99 SRP). This offer should start soon. I might even be able to tell a bit more about it later this day.

Okay, and now the important question: When will it be available on steam? For 50€.. wow nice one, MS.

Windows 7 current RC is getting rave reviews and it's effectively free for another year. I'd go that way on a new build. Vista still irritates me even now.
