Now I have my shiny new Asus P5Q Pro Board and a new hard drive should be arriving tomorrow I want to get it properly setup to run as fast as possible.

I will be reinstalling Windows XP Pro (going to give Vista a miss and go straight for 7)

I had problems last night with the PC detecting my existing hard drives in the white and orange SATA slots, one is detected in the red slots (an 80gb, 7200 Seagate) and the other (an 80gb 7200 Maxtor bought about a month after SATA came out) is not detected at all.  Not a huge problem but just after advice on getting the RAID setup running properly as it is different from any RAID setup I have used before.

Make sure both of your hard drives are plugged into the same colour slots
(I wouldnt mix brands and models with RAID though)

Then make sure all of your motherboard drivers are up to date.
I have 2 extra sata slots on my RE and if I dont install drivers, I cant see them

Im not sure, But on my RE the different colours are for some autoRAID things..
I dont use them as theyr unstable and cause lots of failures but the standard ICH9 chipset RAID works flawlessly Smiley

I'm assuming this is your motherbaord layout (I just googled P5Q Pro)
Just stick to the RED slots for now mate
Read the book, itll tell you your options as ASUS manuals are usually pretty comprehesive.

Often different coloured slots are used by an additional IO controller on the board. you need to keep things to the same controller (preferablythe intel one) to setup RAID for your OS.

Plug the drives in, go into bios and you should have an option to change the sata controller operation, it'll be on ATA/IDE or ACHI and you shoud set it to RAID.

Then when you reboot you'll have an extra screen after the bios POST, and you can hit a button to enter the RAID bios and configure your drives. Use a 32 or 64k stripe for general use apps.

What drive is arriving tommorow? you'll be limited in size by the smallest drive in the array. Plus it's not a great idea to mix and match makes/models/revisions of drive if you can help it.

That may explain why my old RAID setup didn't work too well.  Getting a 320Gb WD Caviar Blue, probably be alot quicker on it's own than the 2 old HDs in RAID setup.

Waiting for Windows 7 to come out before I get another hard drive so I can get an OEM copy.
