The demo did a horrible job selling the game to me. I will wait for a free weekend to see what else is in there, but with the demo I'm not impressed. The only cool moment was at the fenced construction site, everything else is meh or same as the first game. I HATE the meelee weapons. Takes away a valuable player, who will jump into the zombie horde begging you to shoot him by accident or to save his ass when he gets overrun. Yay. Weapons feel weird for the most part and it really looks unfinished on several parts of the level and it's two weeks before release...

The melee is powerful if you're not with idiots, but playing with randoms admittedly is asking for trouble, but they could do something stupid with a gun as well so shrug. That was only one and a half levels of a campaign with only one crescendo so clearly a relatively boring portion compared to the rest of the game. I saw nothing that looked unfinished where do you mean?

I have played through the two levels with bots and humans. I need to play Versus, or these new modes, to find out if it is worth getting at all. And certainly I need to play with people who are not asses. Daytime doesn't do it for me. Melee is cumbersome except for the awesome swinging guitar. The new items are okay, I guess, at least adding some random choice. New weapons are all meh to me though, none really feel accurate or fun to use sadly. So, free weekend and/or bargain price for me - I'm paying expansion price for what is to me a expansion.

I did find it pretty cool to see more "story" - yeah, I'm a sucker for a world that feels worth playing through, and having the army blowing things up is cool in the intro video (all that kind of stuff is fascinating to me).

Well okay.. the park for example. If that IS finished, then it's just ugly. Several appartments and some alleys look like what I mapped for Counter-Strike. Cars are misplaced in the streets, partially hanging in the air and in general, the levels are smaller than before, only stretched out by the fact that they make you run through them like through a labyrinth, instead of just straight from one corner to another. Just take the (admittedly awesome) rolling crescendo event for example. It's nothing, but a square box with "walls" put there for no reason, but to make you spend a lot more time there, than you would without the walls. A fence is built in the middle of the street, just so, that you can go into a building on one side of it and get out on the other side (first saferoom)? How effective and/or convenient.

Weapons (especially the new shotguns) just feel weird to me. The kickback looks ridiculous and the way the are holding the guns would probably break their hands when shooting the shotguns. It's just ALL WEIRD. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Daylight doesn't do the graphics any favors, L4D is not that shiny either, but you mostly don't notice, because it's a bit darker. Here all the bad textures are exposed, it's either fully lit or pitch black in some rooms (please don't look at the textures in those dark rooms).

As for meelee, I can't help myself but feel stupid, when I see two people in front of me holding off a wave of zombies with a frying pan and a guitar. That's just silly. I mean is this a zombie apocalypse or a comedy sketch? Totally kills the immersion for me.

And the flashlights of your mates still don't cast any shadows (or illuminate anything for that matter), which I'd hope for a so called sequel.

I HOPE the code they show in the demo is work in progress, but they don't have much time to finish it (if they don't have a finished version already).

I'm just saying.. they had to PATCH A DEMO, because of the bugs already discovered in it... Anyway, I'll shut up from now on, I don't want to spoil the game for people, who enjoy it.

P.S.: On a plus side, the fire is looking better now.

The park is a bit ugly and lame I suppose compared to other areas, as for the crescendo its a set piece first and a gameplay obstacle second I think. Its trying to tell the story of the quarentine and it makes perfect sense if you imagine lines of infected people shuffling along being watched by army guys on the tower. The frying pan I can look the other way but the guitar is a bit silly. Thats the final campaign in the demo though so hopefully the others have less pan spawns and guitars, like the restaurant is clearly going to be full of pans but say the swamp fever campaign would make more sense to have more machetes and chainsaws and outdoorsy melee. The flashlights is probably partly to do with greifing, if your friends flashlights don't cast light of course they're not going to cast shadows, and if they cast light you know some jackass in a public game is going to try to blind you. (Wait do the flashlights cast light atm? Man I've totally forgotten). The graphics looked good to me on my sisters machine, mine has a slightly poor draw distance and stuff gets detextured and looks poo but on hers it was bright, interesting and good (except for the park admitedly, which seems nothing like a real park). The guns iuno, apart from the original assault rifle i didn't like the handling of any of the old guns are you sure its not just new guns/personal taste? And they at least handle better than borderlands guns, I have decent guns in borderlands now but sometimes it feels like i'm shooting and the bullets are just teleporting into my enemy and theres no real feedback.

And certainly I need to play with people who are not asses.

...So, free weekend and/or bargain price for me - I'm paying expansion price for what is to me a expansion.


And final pretty much I just play with randoms because I bum L4D so hard but its still and awful and generally disappointing experience the only way to play properly is with a team of 4 people you can have a laugh with. And is the bargain weekend going to be cheaper than £20? Thats what we all paid for it. I can't remember what the price was on the L4D ones?

I pretty much only use the shotguns in L4D1, it wasn't much of a gun game anyway, but they messed up the shotguns in L4D2. As I said, if you'd hold a shotgun like this - pretty much at the middle of your body, your hands extended away from the body, you'd break your wrists on the first shot. Except the shotgun barely jumps one inch up when they shoot, so I guess it's okay. Probably a special sort of a shotgun. SMG seems to need more hits to down a zombie, than a pistol. Sniper rifle is about the same as L4D1 (didn't like it back then either). The old shotgun (Tier 2) is the only weapon that feels right to me (well and the pistols). Oh and the CS:S weapons in the german version feel nothing like in CS:S. Basically just reskins with poorly done sounds.

I'd have to agree with you on the crescendo, when we were running through, I didn't fully realized what that place is supposed to be, I thought it was some kind of outside storage shelves or something. It makes sense for a infected checkpoint. But the point still stands. They take a square area and map your way out in such way, that you have to visit every inch of that area instead of just crossing it from one side to the other. Just pay attention on how the streets are built and where the fences and barriers are put. You are basically taking a big detour just to end up on the same spot, but behind a fence or a wall or whatever every time. You don't even have to go into the park, you can just go through the left along the fence all the time and if you could jump over it, the level would be like 1/3 of what it is in the demo. Old levels felt much more stretched out to me, more like.. I dunno.. going somewhere, instead of constantly trying to get around some obstacles in your way.

Well don't get me wrong, there are good points about this game, but most of them (except more bosses and a better gore system) are also in the original game. So when Chet said "when you play it, you will see it is so much more than the first game" - I don't see it. Just looks like some additional campaigns to me. We called stuff like this "mods", back in HL1 days. And waiting for the free weekend has nothing to do with the price, it's to see if there is more in the game that I like. I would pay full price for it, if I'd find enough stuff for me in there. From the demo, it's 20 pounds that I didn't spend that I would regret spending. It will always be available for 20 pounds somewhere anyway, if you don't buy it on steam.

I suppose it's very much more of the same, and I'm a bit torn on the expansion pack/full game thing too. I don't see much engine wise that warrants full price, but then a whole bundle of new maps is a lot of work - and I'm sure there's loads of stuff we haven't seen yet.

As disco says it's all about friends, it's almost a different game with the right people. Bit worried how I've played through the demo 4-5 times and not gone back to it though, blame borderlands perhaps.

Wanking replaced sleep in Oblivion with one of the recent updates. It's better now actually, as it adds points towards strength and dexterity (with very small swords).

You can tell I didn't play oblivion beyond the intro dungeon, can't you?

The original assault rifle is epic win in the right hands, and i'm getting good enough with the sniper rifle now to take that sometimes as well. Taking the autoshotty every time is just lazy, a good team with 4 autoshotties is a pain in the ass for infected (and needs nerfing, i'm sure in l4d2 i've seen only 2 shotties spawn say preventing the all shotty teams) but when your team sucks you can keep them afloat by putting the hurt on infected with the assault rifle. I havn't tried all the new shotguns but the thing is if they behaved realistically you'd have to scale back on horde sizes so the weapons are tweaked to be a little unfair, but maybe realism mode fixes the weapon behaviour too Tongue. And i'm glad the CSS guns are not like CSS, CSS sucks more than doom3 (burn!)

I had an issue with the new gun pickup system (i.e. more of a range rather than tiers) while playing in SP the other day. Since they've now taught bots how to use the sniper rifles (something that I don't think they did in the original) they'll happily pick them up. They also favour the best weapon available at the time, which was never an issue with tiers since they just sort of grabbed them at random. However, we got through to the middle of the hedge maze to find the standard ammo pile and the high-end rifle, which all 3 bots promptly picked up. This made them TOTALLY USELESS in a horde fight.
