1600 is most likely a MAX but I'm not sure your cooling could handle it. If you cant get into windows at your current fsb, then increase the vcore by 1 increment at a time by pressing the + key and reboot. If you get into windows, increase your fsb some more and restart this process untill you get into windows with temps at around 55degC at full load! (full load matters a LOT) It is a very time consuming task

im tempted to give this a go on my new i7 setup but i have 2 main concerns. one being my poop gc and the other being the fact i use a fanless heatsink and it ides around 35-41 (generally depending on if i have the door open or closed for an extended period of time so the heat escapes the room)

You have a 9600 right? I wouldnt oc yet.. you wont see any benefit at all in games.. you will outside that but even then it depends what tasks you're doing! stick with stock clocks for now.. and when it comes to the gpu upgrade, look at fans for your cooler (you can tie a fan to any cpu cooler to increase airflow Most i7 CPUs will clock to 4-4.5Ghsz easily but you have to watch your temps

so far i'm at 3ghz from 2.66 with a FSB of 1493 and temps around 37 full load. if i'm trying to get around the 60 mark then i'm *guessing* i can get quite a bit more out of the CPU but i'm concerned that going to that level will really be pushing it too much?

You should be able to squeeze a lot more out of that badboy!
How long into your load test is the 37Deg? What is your ram at atm?

I meant what speed is your ram running at? Playing with the fsb adjusts the cpu and ram I would do a burn test with prime or orthos overnight before going any further
