I've always found core 1 to run hotter than any others, and I'm fairly sure it's down to Windows throwing the most processes on that core as it isn't very optimised.  When running Linux my temps seem to be a lot more evenly spread out across the 4 cores.  I'm not an extreme hardware geek so I'm just assuming, but it sounds about right!

So in summary: don't worry if core 1 is a little higher than the others (p.s. Linux can force processes on to your other cores, it's awesome).

Wow, now I've reseated my HSF, I get the following temps:
36 32 38 38
56 50 51 52

Also reseated my 4850 graphics cooler and that is now running 3/4 degrees cooler.

My RAM is:
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4Gb (2x2Gb)
DDR3 PC3-10600 • 6-6-6-20 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
Motherboard:
Asus Maximus Extreme (x38 chipset, you should know - it was yours)
CPU:
Q9550

try fsb@400, without doing anything to the voltages (if you have set them, otherwise, set them at 1.2 )
If that doesnt work, increase the volts untill you get into windows, Remeber to keep the ram freqs the same as to minimize failures into windows
You may have to go as high as 1.3Vcore

Ok - it wouldn't boot for ages, and then I found some magical setting and now it boots *doh*

Got my FSB to 400 giving me 3.4Ghz

Results of 20 minutes of prime with realtemp and cpu-z are shown below:

(p.s. I just set my vcore to 1.3 in the bios, so maybe it'll go lower for that overclock but I havn't checked)

edit: I've just bumped it up to 3.544Ghz and getting average prime95 load temps of 65/60/60/60ish. I went that bit higher so my RAM would still run at clock speed and timings. (1335Mhz)

Any suggestions on where to go from here, or am I pretty much at my limit without seeing if my vcore will go down any further?

your mobo can go up to 425 fsb on quads (or at least thats all I could get out of it with my q9450 with that board under water)
I think youll be able to get up to that kind of setting later in the year when it cools down again (weather wise), other than that, its time to give your ram a going over (provided you get a good 12hour run of prime on that OC with no failures)
But its running a little hot, Im sure it could go faster, but I would wait and see before pushing it past 60degC

Well I had a play around last night trying to get the vcore down and managed to get it stable at 1.21875 instead of 1.3V - ran prime95 for 8 hours overnight and got a max temps of 65/59/60/61 - but the hot core was more like 61-62 under the full load as an average. Idle temps of 43/49/38/39.

I'm guessing with the RAM I need to start from scratch again and see what the max stable RAM speed is right?

You should be able to get a nice OC outa this bad boy now!
Although your core voltage is quite high at stock, did you set that or is it on auto? (If you havnt touched it, its on auto, but please specify)
1.3+ vcore on stock speeds is quite high (very in fact) so-
My first port of call would be to set the voltage of your CPU to 1.3 in the bios, boot into windows and see if all is ok at this voltage. Then lower the voltage by 0.05 and do the same. Keep taking 0.05 volts away untill you cannot boot into windows and revert to your last successful voltage.
To make sure that this voltage is ok for your current clocks, do a prime run for about an hour and if nothing fails, you should be good.
Do this and report back

Your VID is not the same as your actual Vcore.. your VID is the workable voltage range, meaning you can set it to any of these paramiters, but they might not work.. I would never set a Vcore to 1.5 either..
I think itll be around 1.2ish

now, increase the FSB (try to make sure the RAM stays around the same speed as stock) by around 5 at a time.. boot into windows each time and see if you get there. If not, you can increase the Vcore by 1 increment each time untill you get into windows with your core temps around 60degC (thats your max. As soon as you hit that temp, your done)

No, the FSB speed. But you increase the vcore (cpu voltage). As you increase your FSB speed, you will have to increase the vcore to give the processor more power (which in turn produces more heat).

The best way to do it would be to lower your multi to 6x (or whatevers lowest) and try from there. That would be your max OC, but your not gonna get that on air so I never bother! You should be looking to get around 3.2 max I think. Your MoBo is your wall. NV Mobos are crap overclockers
