I dont mind you guys asking me for help with some OCing..
I quite like it to be honest, its my hobby so Ill share my knowledge and experiences with you!

Before I do though, this is always the first thing that I ask for.
A screen shot of a 20 min run of Prime95 with realtemp and CPU-z open at the same time.
Ill use this to get your temps and voltages ect.. Id also like to know your idle temps to guage your potential OC too.. I can usually guess pretty close to the results with just that info

I also need to know what motherboard and ram you have!
So if you could list them with Motherboard/NBchip and RAM/Speed/Timings

You can find all of the apps you need HERE!
(that might be the X64 version of prime, you can get the X86 version here)
There is also a Generic CPU benchmark app included in that download too, so you can see what extra power your overclock has given you! Run it once before you start, and then again once your done and compare

I may add to this soon answering some of your questions here as well as in PM for future problems

once you have reseated the hsf like you said, do a run of prime and send me a screenie

I stressed my CPU until the temp leveled out (after about 10 mins) (using TAT, not prime95 (any difference?)) and got roughly 46/47 degrees.

i started getting all the info you need but after starting the test and seeing my cpu temp rise to 96 i think i better check to make sure there's no dust blocking up the heat sink :/

what a difference a clean out makes and there wasn't even that much crap clogging up the heat sink. anyway

cpu idles at 30
real temp won't show it's proper window in win 7 so i used hw monitor instead. is max temp going to mean much? i only started hw monitor just after the test ...

I kinda needed to see it all with Prime running
Your CPU has some green features on it that lets it use less energy when not in use, which is why youll see your multiplier go down (with your clock speed)
So to get a good OC i need to know your max temps and clocks (inc multi ect)

But you should get fairly high with that chip and mobo combo, about 3.2ish

Now, obv I'm not chaos and I'm not exactly an expert on OCing stuff, but considering you don't really want to go over 60, and you're currently at 54, that doesn't give you much space to OC. You might want to try re-seating your heatsink. (it dropped my temps by over 10 degrees).

I've got a Q9550 and one core always shows about 5 degrees hotter than the other 3? Should I OC to the core that shows the highest temp, or is it likely to be a faulty sensor that's causing the difference in the readings?

I'm taking some temperature benchmarks now, as I know I need to reseat my heatsink as I ballsed it up a bit when I did it first time around so I can compare the differences.

Marenghi, You dont have any headroom for an OC currently as your temps are too high!
If you could reseat the HSF, you could get some room for a free upgrade in speed.

Deadly, it doesnt make much of a difference with quads (or duals) when it comes to core temps. as long as 1 of them isnt going over 60degC you should be fine mate

Well I've just ran a Prime95 with realtemp open and got the following max/min temps:
48 43 42 45
70 64 65 65

As you can see - my core 1 is running about 5 degrees warmer than the others. I'm hoping having a reseat will reduce those max temps down - as I know they were lower before I messed it up.

yea, your zalman should be giving you good temps. So a reseat should do you some good.

Also, Marenghi, after reseating your HSF (the temps are most likey affected by this recent heatwave hehe)
Youll most likely need to go into the BIOS and upp the FSB (in increments of 5 untill you can no longer boot into windows) when your there, set the Vcore to 1.3volts and
