I just spent the morning doing this, stability testing atm.

Going to get a new cooler for my birpday and try and get it higher.

I know it won't make any difference but I want to stretch my ePeen .

I know none of you care, but after nearly 12 hours we have no crashes and temps are down to 55 degrees so I'm tempted to go huge and hit 3.4 tomorrow.

So I realised my watch was running kinda slow and I assumed that I'd need to uh, overclock it so it'd run faster but it got too hot so I guess the question is...

Should I watercool?

Nah, not necessary Beau. U should be able to achieve the required 'overclock' on air. What u need to do is make sure that u maintain a steady 2500rpm spin.

I'd be interested in knowing what you changed to get the overclock tbh.... my attempts at overclocking (even just a modest 1 or 2 %) just cause my Gigabyte motherboard to say "last boot didn't work, reverting to previous stable BIOS settings".

My mobo is a G41-ES2L.. anyone else got one? It's pretty decent tbh but I'm not sure that making overclocking easy was one of the objectives for it

Beau, have you tried reducing the graphical details first? Maybe you can make your clock run fast enough without an overclock then? Shouldn't it be enough for you if the clock just would show the hours, instead of hours:minutes:seconds?

@ John: if you have the same CPU, 3 GHz should be possible in any case. The problem is usually the clock speed (because the RAM is also getting overclocked here, so you need to check for RAM:FSB ratio) or the voltage, which you have to up a little for higher clock speed to be stable.

ty, Power but I have a core 2 duo @ 3ghz that I want to get a little more out of if I can.

My trouble is not really knowing what voltage needs tweaking and my clock ratio seems tied to the RAM speed - upping the ratio gives me a faster CPU, but the RAM also clocks up to a level it wasn't suited for without extra voltage too. I suppose I need an idiots guide tbh.

If you up the FSB, you need to up the voltage for your cpu. just 1 step at a time until it boots. then 1 step at a time untill it's stable in the OS

Upped my FSB to 333 which  wouldn't post as the ram had scaled up, so dropped that back down to 800 and got into Windows fine. Did 2 hours prime to check temps/stability and once I was happy that I could get a bit more out of it, just whacked the FSB up to 355 which didn't post again so had to lower the DRAM freq to 711 and got in. Just coming up on my 23rd hour of prime95 with no problems.

For some reason I haven't had to change voltages at all, unless my board is adjusting them automagically, in which case, I think its going a fucking good job as its the core voltage is only about 0.064 higher then stock under load.

edit - Also, I found that pretty helpful for a basic overview. Everything else I picked up came from bugging Chaos and Zarf .

My Q6600 went up to 3.2GHz with no over-volting. Its a damn good chip for OC'in.

Yeah man, things a beast, love it!

Had a try at 3.4 but kept getting blue screens in prime95. After 4 or 5 tries I gave up and played some Resi instead.

Will try again next Saturday I think; going to try a lower multi with a higher FSB.

Just finished re-doing the watercooling on my PC to mount the radiator on the top of the case and watercool my graphics card (because I found the full cover block for £30 on ebay).

Maximum temperature of CPU after ~10 mins prime 95: 52C
Graphics card temperature: 36C

Considering my graphics card used to run up to 80C when it was using the stock cooler playing TF2 and now I havn't managed to get it above 40C - I'd say that's pretty freaking awesome!

Might do - want to overclock my CPU first. I had resisted it before as I didn't have the heatsink mounted properly and it wasn't seeing 2Gb of RAM so didn't think it was a good idea to start messing around with it.

/jealous.
3GHz is my limit thanks to a passive heatsink, uATX mobo and crappy ram.. Still it handles everything I thow at it no bother.
Depending on disposable income I might go Bulldozer in summer, it's looking like an absolute beast of a chip.
