Said I needed about 250w, I have a 600W PSU, lol.

I did guess some of the stuff (CBA to look it up, lol). I'm happy though, I'd rather have too much than not enough, plus the difference in price isn't that much.

I've got 60 million CD's and fuckign bits of digital history. So what? You aint' ever going to play them.Even if they're worth it, it's easier to buy again on Steam!

But you're right, Steam doesn't have everything. However, with the success of Steam, it is difficult to envisage a gaming world where you need physical media anymore. Even EA has a download store. So, I stick by my position, optical drives are for yesterday's man. Totally unnecessary.

QFT, only thing I use my optical drive for is burning off OS installation discs and mp3 cd's for my car (i have a cable to plug my mp3 player in, but my mp3 player is bust Sad and havn't got round to getting a new one )

Even the games I own discs for have been downloaded as iso's and stored on my file server, where I can mount them over the network if I need them.

lol I like to keep current too gas, but that statement is quite a "bold" one (anyone else and I would have called you a few names... your gas so its ok lol)

Optical drives are always going to be an important part of the pc... if not the optical, then a newer form of it! For example, Downloading films legally (like on the x360) is a valid way to do it, but the big dog movie makers are supporting Blu-Ray to the fullest, theres waaaay too much money to be had in selling discs (look at the price difference on the older flicks that have been updated or at least ported) to the new blue!

Digital downloads are GOING to be the future, but the future is to come, now is now, optical is still very relivant and will be for some time.
Until everything is legally downloadable, and the shops are closed, and 1 company has a monopoly over the whole thing Ill still love the DVD drive in my pc!

side note, how are you going to download an OS to a computer without one? buy a hard drive with it pre-installed? thats just stupid

I though computers were born with the OS. When they die, I usually bury them in our pets graveyard and buy a new one from the shop where they hatch them Smiley

Hmm, Idea, How about putting it on a USB drive? like a standard dongle, But locked and unformatable?
Vista isnt a Dual Layer, So it could fit on a 5GB one... I know they may have to go up to an 8GB one, but by the time that its doable its gonna be cheap anyway.. Its just making sure the bios knows how to access it which can be done with a quick flash

Yeah - that's an interesting point.

All these ultraportable netbooks (which I still covet greatly), or indeed the mac-book air (in it's crippled, overpriced form) don't have CD-rom drives and so you have to use either a USB CD-drive - or use a USB memory stick or even an external HDD, which can be done quite easily so I hear.

(Most modern motherboards even allow for bios flashing from external drives)

Also - interesting point chaos - I also think that considering how much it is used in large organisations that it won't be long until you can install an OS over the internet too. I guess one problem is data retention - don't these usb drives lose data after a certain number of read/writes, and they are also susceptible to power surges etc? A cd, kept in good condition (so no scratches etc) might last longer?

I can't wait till the game companies find out that there is more profit in selling all their games on SD cards, no more of that rotating drive shet!
