Just read the review for the new i7's in CPC. That is currently the fastest commercial CPU on the planet (apparently). Means we can start to get better components for less in the Intel LGA775 range now. But it's already on its way to being obselete.

You would think things would get cheaper - long term yes, short term is that the new kit is too pricey just now and people are buying the LGA775 stuff (but expecting it to be cheaper etc). I'm stuck in LGA775 myself... not that its a problem just yet

i7 isnt worth it at the moment... it provides no real performance improvement over the 775 quads... and its still a 45nm chip, so unless your crunching or rendering, stick to 775 and oc the hell outa it! the big difference is the x58 boards... sli and crossfire on the same chip... and apparently ASUS are planning to release an 775 x58 board (might be called something different...) should mean about a 550fsb on a q9650 (which will be a world record... LN cant even do that )

basically i7- good step forward in general but not for us gamers (untill they release the 8/16 core chips) x58 - the new intel motherboard chip/replacement for the x48 chips... can have multiple nVidia or ATI card setups which has only been seen on the skulltrail platform but thats too unstable and wastes CPUs like i do a vindaloo! Ill wait for the 8/16 cores (or nVidias top secret project if they ever release it!)

Ive kinda been given the impression that i7 is a big step forward but the thing thats holding it back at the moment is the price (and especially the price of the motherboards and triple module DDR3 kits) which is understandable given that its completely unopposed in terms of performance and Intel probably has a large stock of Core CPU's to run down If someone was in the market for a new PC and could afford an i7 based rig they would be nuts not to go for it! I believe scan does a 3XS system for about £1,500 that is i7 based which, given the heavy overclock and usual scan build quality, is a bargin.

im not saying that i7 isnt good, because it is a good jump forward... but its no more powerfull than the current 45nm chips when it comes to games... thats been proven multiple times over at XtremeSystems... what is good is that the technology is improving and it will make for better building blocks for the future

"apparently ASUS are planning to release an 775 x58 board (might be called something different...) "
How would that even work? IIRC A main point of i7 is that the memory controller is integrated into the CPU itself, x58 boards therefore don't have a memory controller built into the northbridge. Even If they can shoehorn in the northbridge from a previous chipset generation it's going to have the same FSB limitations as now.

True, i7 isnt going to boost your framerates by much (though thats not entirely suprising) but i though the plan was to upgrade a work PC that wouldnt be used for gaming Finally I get permission to upgrade my work PC

I have a budget of £150 and all I am keeping of the old PC is the hard drive and DVD-RW. Games are not allowed (or advisable), mind you nor is surfing the net for half the day.
