You'd also need Vista 64bit to use all 4 rig of ram. Vista 32 and XP will only read and use upto 3Gb. So unless that's were u intend to go, just buy 2Gb and buy more later, it's so cheap it will cost less in the future and u can use the extra cash elswhere in the build.

you'd be better off without a 64bit OS atm, there is almost no support for XP64 and very little for Vista64 as well as many many game incompatibilities with the 64 bit architecture

just stick with 32 bit as it will do the trick and save you an ass load of hassle

NOT TRUE
Since SP1, there have been LOADS of driver updates (dont even try belkin stuff though) and ALL of my steam games work... thats ALL of the valve games and ALL of the rockstar games... Also the Unreal games work fine... and I have had No problems as of yet...
Vista 32 bit doents recognise all of your ram... it can only map 3GB of ram (including video ram on your gfx...) so if you have 4gb of ram in your mobo, and a graphics card with 512mb your only getting 2.5Gb of ram!
Vista 64 is by far the best option now...
do your research bro

since when is 4gb even needed unless you run a render farm?

seems like a waste of time, plus i wouldn't touch vista with a barge poll

Well, our render farm computers at the computer graphics chair have 32 or even 64 gigs of RAM each. (2 teras of HDD, Double-Quadcore Xeon and SLI GTX280...) So yeah, you don't actually NEED it. Wink

But from just those machines I can confirm that gaming is very well possible on 64bit installations. Grin

Personally, I like having more RAM, since I tend to fire up multiple applications (GIMP, Illustrator, Firefox w/ loads of tabs, etc...) and move data between them. My 4 gigs are nearly always almost half full even on idle...

As for Vista... Meh, still sorta dislike it... As long as I can get and install xp (64), I'll use that.

For rendering purposes the machines usually run linux, but xp64 works as well.

Actually, I read a review somewhere that Vista will utilise ALL the ram in the system you have and load less into a page file. So you will see a performance increase from 3-4, 4-5, 5-6gb's etc. etc. etc. I think individual programs are limited to 3Gb though (not that many can use it).

If you have a fairly decent pc then I see no problem in running Vista. I have been using vista since it was initially released and when I first got it...it is a complete and utter ballache. But then after a couple of months and drivers have been released (it even recognises and has the drivers for my sony stereo with usb connection to act as an extra soundcard - i had lost the cd and couldn't download them anywhere) and i figured out how to turn UAC (the dialogue boxes) off I think it's great and it looks much better than XP. And yes, I believe it's more stable. I probably would have poked linux onto it by now however for some reason my pc doesn't like it at the moment and having no end of trouble!

As for actual applications not running, there have been very few...the only one I can think of is a model helicopter simulator software that came with my helicopter.

that's my 5p's worth!

This is getting increasingly geeky, but the memory thing is due to a limitation (seems a bit harsh to call it a deficiency) of the 32-bit x86 processor range. So Vista/XP/whatever, doesn't make much difference. It's the 64-bit version you want, in that case.

Heh, thanks guys. I would replace the motherboard but I am saving for a new rig since it's fu*cked.

I am going to get a dual board (two processors) probibly dual core rather than quad, 8 gigs of ram (I have vista premium and it suports it). and two midrange Navida cards and SLI them.

It might take me a month or so to save for it though, I have a few bits and bobs going on at the moment.

Speak later chaps!

EDIT - I posted this before reading page two, popular threrad huh? I might invest in Vista untimate 64bit, we will see. Are you sure only 64bit OS can suport large amounts of ram?

EDIT2 - lol, I just read the commnet about spilling beer on it. The funny thing is about 3 months ago, prehaps 4 I broke my old motherboard by knocking a cup of coffee of my dask down next to the computer, it splassed through some unused card slots and fried the board. Not having much luck am I? Smiley

Err.. those motherboards are expensive and are usually in server machines? I'd honestly just go for a decent quad core and standard motherboard combo. You'll regret buying a double slot motherboard designed for Intel server processors (like Xeons etc). Go for some tried and tested kit that offers excellent performance - talk to the clan members for some good recommendations (Chaos has an uber PC if I remember rightly).

EDIT - I posted this before reading page two, popular threrad huh? I might invest in Vista untimate 64bit, we will see. Are you sure only 64bit OS can suport large amounts of ram?
If you think of memory as a large array of little boxes, with each box having a unique address. The limitation on a 32bit O/S is entirely to do with the number of little boxes that can be addressed.

You have more address space in 64bit operating systems so more can be used. In a 32bit O/S, the addressable limit is 4gb, with some of the address space being reserved for other things (like some BIOS and kernel functions) - that's why you don't see the full 4GB in a 32bit O/S.

To get real geeky:
http://cnx.org/content/m13082/latest/

The last couple of paragraphs say it all - the addressable range of a 64 bit O/S is simply massive!
The explanations on the relative size of the addressable ranges are quite awesome - look at the "time" paragraph.

This might take a little longer than I hoped, work just announced that we are going onto a 4 day working week because of the current market (it's bad, very bad). So i'll be £3240 worse off a year, or £270 a month till they change it.

Well at least they have not started redundancies yet!

I am not really having much luck as of late. I was messing around with my old computer and stupidly changed it from a domain to a workgroup to get around some network issues, however the login infor was based on a domain so I locked myself out. I tried to fix it in safemode but I dont know the admin password, and rolling back failed too.

Just installed xp but I have lost a few drivers (sound and graphics) so I'll be hunting them out today. The graphics card is a PNY FX5500 but I have no idea what the sound drivers are, I'll have to open it up later and see if I can hunt down the motherbord manufactoror.

Laters!
