From what I've seen Dave, the performance increase over the 8800GT isnt worth the price? What I mean is that you already have a decent card so you wont be getting a huge benefit compared to someone with a more modest card (i.e. me - with my ATI 3850). That said, I've been an ATI fan since the 3800 series came out - good performance at a good price.

I've just gotten myself one of those 8800GTs, and I'm really happy with the performance. Since there seems to be ATI folk around, have the drivers gone any better? I have avoided the 3850 in spite of its more favourable reviews because of the horrible, horrible experience that were the Catalyst drivers some years ago... While I honour ATI/AMDs disclosure of the specs for Open Source development, those drivers are also not relly up to speed yet. I think I might give ATI another chance though when those are ready...

I've found the drivers to be very good, and less troublesome than NVIDIA tbh! lol
I also find that the quality (for normal Windows app use) is higher (less fuzzy) than NVIDIA.
For the record, this is the first ATI card that I've owned, all prior cards were NVIDIA.

Catalyst has had some major fixing, it works a lot better than before.

I've owned several ATI cards and thought they were all very good value. The driver packages were comprehensive and updated regularly.

My own personal opinion is that the ATI cards are offering tremendous value for money.
I don't really push the graphics card envelope too much (i.e. I haven't played Crysis or anything that demanding) but for TF2 a cheap 3800 series card from ATI will certainly do the job!
For those on a budget watch the 3850 and the 4850 series - they will be awesome for the price. I also note that Overclockers.co.uk are selling 3870's for under £100. Not too great a saving over a 4850, but if the price continues to drop significantly they offer great performance for the price! The price can only really go down too!

lol as far as drivers go, the ati ones are far better! they could do with fan control for the newer cards, but theyr very good and extremely stable! i never had a crash on the cards as of yet (the failure is due to some bios problem on the card itself apparently!) The cards also have the best anti aliasing structure on the market! I can whack the AA up to 16X on tf2 with no problems at all... and everything on high (the AA limits the fps to 60 for some reason... but my monitor can only do that so who cares!) I wouldnt trade my ATI cards for anything else out there... maybe the 4870X2 when they come out lol... get 2 of em for quad Xfire:)

Well, I'll ask for first refusal on your 4870 when you upgrade to the X2 versions
