Will I be able to build my own box to run SteamOS? Yes. Can I hack this box? Run another OS? Change the hardware? Install my own software? Use it to build a robot? Sure. Can I download the OS to try it out? You will be able to download it (including the source code, if you're into that) but not yet.

If you do that and some other stuff it gives you a chance to be one of the 300 that get a free beta steam machine.

Its not free cow. It remains property of valve. Yet you have to pay any taxes and fees on it. Pretty bullshit to have the second condition with the first.

Godammit Curious. It's just standard lawyer bollocks because why should they be liable for a carrier trying to charge you import fees on the steambox. All you'd have to do is explain to the courier service that the device is still property of Valve and you're not 'importing' it and you won't get charged any fees. It is free in so far as you don't have to pay for the hardware or the participation of the beta.

Who cares if its standard. And they say taxes and fees. Its not reasonable in any way to be taxed for someone else's property. Sure valve don't expect you to pay but they are also shirking what is technically their responsibilities. This is basically a publicity stunt and competition which is what "beta" tests are becoming to major publishers. Having won a competition and then been expected to supply valve with feedback for free i'd expect them to deal with all issues regarding their property. Theres not even a clause saying you can have it at the end if valve say so. Instead the actual agreement just says its theirs forever and they can demand it back at anytime. You have to trust valve to bother to send you a letter rescinding the contract and giving you the machine afterwards which they have not promised or even suggested they might do. Corporate lawyers are evil bloodsuckers but that doesn't mean you have to just agree to their suggestions.

It's not a competition though. It's entry to a limited beta program. At no point does anyone 'win' anything. Besides, if the SteamBox arrived at your door and you ended up having to pay taxes & fees on it - you could always refuse it. Also - 'it's theirs forever' is very common...things like ISP routers are a prime example.
In any case...was very interested to find out about NVidia working with Steam on their OpenGL implementation and being a partner for SteamOS - should mean good things for linux gaming all round - especially with their announcement that they're more open to working with Linux gfx driver developers.
AMD also announced their Mantle thing which I think it meant to be an OpenGL alternative that'll work on Consoles (as they're AMD) as well as PC and gives developers lower level access to the GPU hardware (like direct RAM access, for example) which I hope will translate into better performance. I think it's also open/published so if NVidia took it up as well (iuno how likely that is) then we could be seeing a unified graphics driver (meaning much less effort required to port games between systems).
Sounds like there's lots of movement in GFX manufacturers / PC gaming tech at the moment - very interested to see where it's all going.

Its only not a competition in lawyer speak. It quite clearly is a competition (to win a beta place).
