its not much of an announcement besides telling us the name and that its free. And neither of those are especially surprising.
What I need to know is are the driver optimisations any good? Is it a linux flavour (still a pc you can do what you like with, just with a snazzy interface and gaming optimisations) or is it a locked-down OS in the vein of android (in which case its useless for anyone with an actual gaming PC).

Well we know a bit more....and more will come. I think it has the potential to be interesting especially in how it might change the way and where you use your pc

From the sounds of it, I'd imagine it's designed to be installed as the main OS (or dual boot) on a living room PC or 'steam box' (a pc sold with SteamOS). At a guess I'd say it has it's own window manager / desktop that's pretty much fully integrated with Steam.
"Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want." - Makes me think that you'll still be able to use it as a linux distro and run linux apps.

Oh, the really interesting thing that I missed first time around reading it was that they're saying you'll be able to stream games to your SteamOS PC or 'Steambox' from your PC - this is actually pretty cool and means you'll actually be able to play most/all of your games on your TV by streaming them from your main PC.

This is a vital point for me if I was ever considering this - if it works it basically means you can (easily) use a crap media pc in your living room and still play whatever you want, regardless of graphics/linux compatibility. It also enables easier linux development as devs have a single distro to aim for when porting.

I think one of the most interesting things will be seeing how much the Steam Boxes (Valve made or otherwise) end up costing themselves - if they can put them in console price territory (next gen consoles like what - £400?) in a neat looking box then I think they may seriously be able to compete with consoles with the PC streaming.
If the steamboxes are expensive - I don't think installing SteamOS on a htpc (or otherwise) will ever get the mass-market to gain sufficient momentum.

Sort of a bad time for this if they end up competing with the next gen consoles. A year or two ago when you could throw together a gaming PC that stomped on consoles for hardly anything it would have been a no brainer.
Still interesting if it's linux based though.

I read that you can build your own machine(or use an older rig) slap steamos on it. Did I read that right? If you can use an old existing rig and still be able to stream games that would be awesome
