Well I've finished week 1 of c25k and I'm feeling pretty good. Calves feel worse each time ti start though so I'll leave my next sesh until Wednesday I think, that way I can rest them a bit and still get all 3 sessions next week.

Make sure you stretch after each run. Some decent runner's stretching vids on youtubes.

I do stretch out my calves before and after a run, I think it's mainly because I have to go up and down hills quite a bit as I live near Leeds and flat ground is rarer than rocking-horse crap.

I used to get aching calves too. Was from going up and down the same Brae. I found drinking some pro recover after helped alot. I suppose it works same as if you had been lifting in gym

My understanding is that stretching won't help you avoid muscle soreness as it is simply the natural adaptive process that the body uses to repair your muscle fibre tears. Once you get over the recovery process your muscles will have developed a protection that lasts for around 2 weeks which avoids the damage happening again for similar exercise - which means reduced ache. Thats why is is best to start slowly and build up the protection which then allows you to progress more easily rather than trying to jump straight in with a big workout.
Stretching has other benefits so you should do it anyway but eating properly and lots of rest are really important too. I have also been told that having around 30-50g of lean protein (egg, chicken, soy etc) and 30-50 gram of carbs with high glycemic index within 45min of exercise will result in the best recovery - easiest way to do this is with a recovery supplement like soy protein etc like Allytk mentioned.

What jebus is saying is true if you're suffering from DOMS, though I guess I generally think of DOMS as a lifting thing I imagine if you haven't run before you'd get the same thing but in your legs, especially if you're going up and down hills. It should go away after a week or two like Jebus says.
I get sore calves after running anyway and they hurt more the next day if when I get back I just collapse into my computer chair and don't do my stretching.
Have you joined the WDG group tez? Also, have a bunch of randoms joined the WDG group?

From what I understand you will get DOMS any time you push beyond what your body was set to (ie run faster/further or lift more times/weight) - the degree to which you get it is down to how much further you push.
Yeah stretching with cool down will help plus there are things like ice packs, cold showers, massage etc - think its a case of finding what works best for you and is convenient - but I think you will always get it as its how your muscles get stronger. I actually found that the best way to help with the ache was to go for a short run and warm up - meant I could actually move my legs!
Yeah a bunch of randoms have joined including mr. popular (ilikeapplepie) who I think has joined every group (8,902)!

Can we kick them or make it private or something? I started following the randoms thinking they were bros... Feel betrayed now.
What Jebus is saying is true, tho I feel like the extent of doms goes away after you've been training a while. If it doesn't you could look at cod liver oil tablets or something.
Good website that I should put in the first post is Examine.com. Started by some redditor but all the articles and questions have papers backing stuff up. Smart stuff and can answer a lot of questions.

Also true about going for a short run helping. Don't be too put off going for a run just because of aches. They tend to disappear once you start running. Stuff to watch out for is acute pain when you step and stuff like that.
Resting is important tho.

Does look quite cool tbh. Seems like they've added a good amount of game elements. Anyone played it?

Just got back from week 2 run 1 and omg it kicked my ass. Might be because I'm tired and didn't have any water to drink before I went (forgot) but there were times when I was like "thank fuck for that" after the chime told me it mass time to walk again.

Had a cheat day on my diet today, went for a pub lunch and ordered a real ale before I thought about it, then there wasn't anything low carb on the menu so I ended up scarfing down a tuna melt sandwich and a load of fries.
Went for a run (first one in a fortnight) this evening and it was great though, my first time out with my Vibrams and although i was expecting it to be hard I was surprised that it was all way easier than usual. I finally completed C25K day 1 properly without having to walk the last couple of jog sections! I was even able to pick up my pace and carry on for another 30 seconds on my final jog section. Felt really good. Not sure exactly what it was, probably the Carbs, maybe the new shoes or my general fitness having had plenty of time to build from the last time I went. I'll check how i'm feeling and if i'm still in Ketosis tomorrow, If It's all good I might start having a Carb day once a Fortnight or so.
Got my strength exercises (Pushups, Crunches, Squats) tomorrow, Hoping to beast through them. Last time I was utterly wrecked, almost collapsed in the shower and had to lie down on a towel on the floor for a good 10 minutes before I could summon the energy to dry myself.
