I think this is the 4th serious attempt now, but I genuinely plan to stick to this one, thus writing a daily blog I think would help me actually follow it through, feeling obligated to write my progress n that.

I'm doing it for health reasons this time, as I'm started to actually feel my health deteriorating. And new years just seems the best time to do it.

Day 1 has been ok so far actually. I have the patches and the gum which are doing more than I thought they would. The hardest part has been breaking the routine of going out for a cigarette (ie making a cup of tea, having a smoke while leaving it to brew or taking a break from a game to have a smoke)

Roll on day 2 & 3!

GIVE ME SUPPORT EVERYONE (and I will ignore everyone telling me patches and gum are placebos)

First 2/3 weeks are the hardest, after that it's just breaking the routine. Chewing gum (keep packs everywhere, I have 1 pack in the car, 1 at the computer, 1 at work and I usually have a pack in my jacket) and drinking strong black coffee are 2 other things that really helped me.

Good luck with that buddy, but may I suggest gradually cutting down rather than outright stopping?

Know a lot of people who go for the gradual method, slowly chopping 1 or so a day until they're at a much lower level or stopped outright, just makes the transition easier from what I hear.

I only smoke with a drink, and have done for about 5 years, I don't really feel the need to stop as quite frankly I enjoy it. I keep suggesting this to my sister though, as she's been trying to quit outright for years and it never works. Just wish she'd try this method.

@hawt: Cutting down wouldn't work, the temptation of having cigarettes would mean I'd just smoke them when I wanted, and I'd still be buying them which would defeat the point

Friend of mine stopped cold turkey.  No patches/gum any of that stuff.  He said watching his grandfather die hideously of lung cancer helped him kick it.  That and furious masturbation.  He only recommends the latter.

In 6 months, he went from a wheezing shit bag, to running the Great North Run.  Get that shit done Tommy.
