what are you after?

Does it need to be USB or do you have a half decent sound card/can handle sound with your CPU?

Do you fancy 5.1/7.1? (though imo they're just useless)

Budget?

I know you've said you want a headset, by what on earth for?

You can get some good headphones (Grado, Sennheiser, AKG) and a headphone amp for that price, and buy a clip on microphone for about 5 quid - and don't anyone give me the "oh you can tell the difference" crap because over the net nobody cares/notices.  Unless you're planning on audio production or something, but then you'd be singing into your headset, in which case you've got a whole world of other problems...

+1 for separate headphones + mic. I'm using a set of Sennheiser 595's with a Logitech USB desktop mic.

-1 for separate headphones and mic. It's annoying to have to unclip everything when I go to the bathroom and my cheap mic didn't have a good clip either. I listen to music on my speakers and I'm not sure that audiophile headphones, designed for music are going to be much better than gaming sounds for games.

Same here beyerdynamics dt880s + a 2 quid mic clip on. You can pick up dt770pros for the same money as the PC360s

Moved the topic as it fits better in the technical section of the forums.

I'd probably recommend spending about £50-80 on a reasonable 5.1 headset and then save the rest of the money for something else - £150 sounds like a LOT of money for a gaming headset.

Something like this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-003-TT

I also agree with Brahms that having things clip on etc. is annoying.

Also - the clip on mic + headphones isn't that practical if you go to LANs as you'd have to take the amp and all that extra stuff with you.

I'm just a bit cheap really, any inconvenience resulting from a separate mic is cancelled out by the knowledge that I didn't have to spend twice as much to get the same levels of build quality, audio quality and comfort.

The wide soundstage of my 595's works brilliantly for positional audio with my X-Fi's virtual surround.

I've got a Plantronics GameCom 777 USB 7.1 Surround Sound Headset (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-006-PT&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=1719).
Why? Well, my previous headset was also a Plantronics and I can buy them with a company discount.

Scan are bundling some decent games with the Corsair range of gaming headsets, which makes them much better value than they were.

"Unclip everything"?  It's not a flipping spacesuit.  I understand it's a little less hassle, but one bit buggers: then you're buying a whole new headset.

The mic I bought (this one) came with a clip, but I rarely use it.  Most of the time it just lies on my wrist rest.

For that budget you can get some great headphones that'll last you for years and years, and you won't look like a tit if you wear em outdoors.  With a headset you're shelling out extra for the "convenience", if that's what we're calling it, you will look like a tit if you wear them anywhere other than the house, and the microphones in the headsets are no better than that clip on one.

If I was buying again, I'd look at something like this, possibly with one of these.

I don't know how technical you are, but you could even build yourself a pocket amp and save a fortune.

In short - everyone else is wrong, unless they've agreed with me.  And more importantly: DON'T BUY CHEAP SHIT.

I spent £150ish on a pair of beyerdynamic DT770 Pros and I've never looked back. The sound and build quality are just amazing. I've sat on them, stood on them and thrown them in a fit of rage and they're still like new.

Honestly, get a good pair of headphones and a desktop/clipon mic. Nobody cares about mic quality on the internet as long as they can make out the words you're saying

I think it really depends on whether he wants to listen to music on them or just play games. And when I say listen to music I don't mean blast Maria Callas whilst fucking about on the internet. Over a hundo on headphones and an amp that you'll use whilst doing something else is a waste of time.

If you want to go the clip on route, I have some Sony MDR 7560 which are OK closed back phones (I got them at work to drown out morons). They seem pretty sturdy and they come with a list of replacement parts that you can apparently order from Sony, which I was  impressed by.
