I read that!
It's not quite as odd as it sounds. One of the developers posted in the comments. Men get charged less in a similar way if they choose male heroes.
Basically it's to encourage genuinely mixed-gender groups (as opposed to just males playing females or vice versa). To get the full benefit of the various mods and boosters, you need to have males and females playing in a group.
