I know.

I'd love a new monitor, all crisp and clean. I've got a dual monitor set-up at the moment, one is ok but the other is a bit crap.

Im the same as you Berath. One decent 120hz one and the other one is some old lcd that is not much better than a black and white crt

Yeah, I have the same, one decent 24" and one shitty Dell 19" (might even be 17") that my dad gave me.

Anyway, I went and ordered the LG as it was the cheapest and had the best reviews. Will post thoughts tomorrow when it arives and I'm done with chemo.

Also, I'm well aware that its some kind of gimicky wanky probably-won't-notice-the-difference anyway bullshit, but this is the first time I've had a decent ammount of disposable income to spend on something stupid for a long time and what with everything else that's been going on I decided to treat myself.

Isn't the monitor refresh rate one of the main causes of eye-strain? I guess if you use your computer a lot that might be quite important.

That's been in ye olden CRT days, where the decay of phosphorescence was really noticable at anything below 100Hz, thus causing eyestrain. LCDs hold the image permanently as long as the backlight stays lit and the voltage applied to the liquid crystals. Hence with LCDs, frequency capability only tells you something about how fast the LCD can keep up with a changing input signal.

That said, the noticable difference to a plain old 60Hz LCD is probably more due to reduced display lag on a 120Hz capable monitor than to the actual refreshing of the LCD matrix.

And, I'd like more coverage on the opening statement that a 120 monitor somehow lessens / worsens impact on the GFX card? Surely the GFX card renders every frame anyway?

I guess your graphics card generates the frames as quickly as it can - so you get the FPS that you see in games etc.

Then I guess you have a seperate clock at your screen refresh rate which sends the frame to the monitor once every 1/60th (60Hz) of a second.

If your FPS is faster than the refresh rate, then any additional frames are dropped.

Vsync, for example, locks your FPS to the refresh rate so you don't lose any frames etc.

Frame updates to monitors are pretty odd - tearing can occur when you go over the refresh rate because of the way a VGA card sends data to the monitor/screen; see: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Screen_tearing

Usually on games it doesn't matter so much.

Great for games and browsing, shit for watching stuff. In game you can really notice the difference, its kind of hard to describe but "really really really smooth" is a good start. It's something that you kind of have to use and then you notice when it isn't there. When I reinstalled Windows for example, something seemed odd even just on the desktop and it was because I hadn't turned on 120hz mode. There's also a "Thru Mode" feature, which aparently completly removes input lag, which is pretty cool as well.

The only real problem I have with it is that the viewing angles mean that unless you're sat right infront of it, the colours are all washed out which isn't a problem when you're gaming, but if you're trying to watch something it is a bit anoying. I still have my Yuraku 24" set up next to the LG for watching stuff, but wouldn't go back to a 60hz for gaming.

For £150 it's worth checking out, definatly, seeing as there are other standard 23" monitors for around the same price.

Nice one, something for me to consider.
Would you mind doing an input lag test against the Yuraku for me (I have the same model)? Just open up a stopwatch app that shows times down to the milisecond and run your displays in mirror mode. Then take some photos and see what the lag between the screens averages out at. Even better if you've got a crt you can use as well, they have almost no input lag so gives you a good baseline.

bumpin this.. I'm after a new monitor now. was lookin at the alienware optix as it's got good reviews everywhere but want more opinions.. input lag is important but I'd rather have amazing colours.. LED would be nice too

Don't you have to be leet and pro before 120hz matters in gameplay?

lol.. it's not about being awsome at the game, it's about enjoying it! I just dropped some cash on a new rig (gtx580/i7 980/12gb ddr3) and it's beasting (back to good ol' fasioned air cooling though)

I want a new screen that looks good too.. will eventually replace my keyboard and mouse too but they're holding up for now.

I've been unhappy with my monitor for a long time now and I'm a bit lost with new ones. I was happiest with the 2 dell screens I had (1 I sold to Chuggy and the other to mama) This Samsung one I have just isn't that great

Since I'm goin for a new screen, I might as well get a 120hz one, 3d or not

The ben q i have is awesome for games. Looks really crisp and i have not really noticed any lag so cant be that bad
