Bought a new mobo recently with 4gig ddr3 ram, I believe its this, Decent new Be quiet! 530w PSU - which solved some of the original issues. Still crashing midgame though. Unpredictably too; I can play something like Bully for 7 hours straight with no problems but I'm still crashing in games of TF2 or Portal. When I do crash whatever I was doing gets stuck on a single frame and the sound goes nuts, playing static and the same soundbite about 10-20 times a second. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Using Hzza's old GFX card, no idea what it is.

i was getting a load of crashes on TF2 using newer drivers. i reverted to really old ones and now it works but i think my card is on the way out.
it also might still be a power issue

May sound like I'm being a troll, but would suspect RAM or gfx card.
How do stress testing tools like prime95 respond?

Have you checked your graphics card temperature?

Hz ran a stress test just before i42 and it passed fine after about 25 minutes. And how would I go about testing the GFX card temp?

Is it NVidia? If yes then graphic driver should be able to display temperature. You can try ntune also.

It's very common, because it can be cause by loads of different things. Best to rule out hardware first.

Had that problem before. It's often a conflict with ATi drivers and a steam update. What version of catalyst are you running?

Downloaded it today so assumption would be the most recent version. Blue - It just done it for me in Dragon Age 2 so I'm ruling out Valve being Derp Knights now. Tried a stress test on the GFX card and didn't go higher than 62degrees. Then my stupid cunting antivirus decided to tell me something irrelevant and froze my computer 20 minutes into it. iMad. Edit: Something else I feel I should mention - When it does spaz out it cuts the power of my keyboard, meaning all the silly lights on it go out as well as everything else being unresponsive.

4850, possibly Gigabite. It's a brand new build with new Be-Quiet 530 psu, Asus P67 mobo (B3 revision with the latest BIOS), i5 2500k and that ram IIRC. My first thought was overheating, but that was ruled out (after about half an hour of small FTT's it didn't go over 60). Just getting Cat to remove and reinstall graphics card drivers as he let Steam do it last time which I've heard causes problems and reset the bios to default values as I forgot to do it when I changed the PSU (shouldn't make any difference but meh, can't hurt). I've also checked the ram and its running at the right speed with the right voltages. No idea how to check ram temps or even if it would make any difference tbh... @Zarf - No soundcard.
