As per thread title, I'm looking for 1-2 GB of the ancient RAM to help me on my quest of making my "HTPC" actually be able to playback HD media. It only has 512 MB Ram and it's not enough for anything and I wondered, maybe someone has some old RAM? I might even pay and stuff!!!

Nah mate, need DDR1. BUT after updating to the latest version of Media Player Classic and installing the latest directx my ancient box can actually render 1080p media stutter free. Amazing!

Now to get it to actually render through the graphics card...

Thanks guys, I guess no RAM needed after all (although it is freaking slow all the time).

Well if you insist Wink I currently have 2x256MB in it and 4 slots alltogether. So 2x2x512 would be a great upgrade. I would definately pay for the postage and you have to tell me what you want for it otherwise.

gah, threw some out the other day :/ I'd had a couple of old PC's sat in my room for months, figured i'd never use them again. Think i've still got a stick of 256 PC2100 and one 256 @ PC3200 lying around somewhere, but my 512MB sticks were in the old PC's i got rid of.

Check out your local tips/recycling centers r007, found an old Athlon 64 machine at one last year. Dumpster Diving ftw!

Power (lol) usage is something to bear in mind though, In the UK it's roughly £1/Watt/Year, so building or buying an Atom/ION based box or dedicated player can actually pay for itself over using older hardware, this is the main reason I ditched my old hardware - If it's going to cost £100 a year to run I may as well get something passive and tiny but equally capable instead.

ION based systems will use around 25W playing 1080p MKVs, and 10-15W idle, vs about 100W for an AthlonXP system which idles at around 50-60W. A WD TV live is even better at under 10W idle or load.

Of course, if you can be bothered to unplug stuff, and only power on when you want to watch something the point is moot.
