Basically, I'm looking to move the entire Users folder to another partition, but it fights back... So far I tried using the command propt starting after I boot up with the Win7 DVD, but it doesn't copy the stuff the way it has to (using xcopy). I was looking to set up a hardlink after moving the files, so no registry editing and stuff would be necessary, but the actual problem is getting an exact copy of the files on the other partition. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, it copies the normal fine without a problem, but with the hidden/system files it doesn't work.

Anyone done this thing before? How did you do it?

I never figured out how to move the entire users folder...however...

1) I installed a program called link shell extension - which makes the process of making symbolic/hard links a lot easier.
2) You can set up the location of your 'libraries' to be on another drive etc.

As regards, win7. Microsoft did a migration utility that was very usefull.

I'd recommend just moving libraries/core folders to other drives. I've done this fine on my server, so it doesn't fill up the OS drive. I can point out the details if you want them; pretty easy to move them.

Well yeah I settled with that for now, but what can't be moved is the folder AppData, which certain programms and games insist on saving data into (Chrome is one of them for some reason). It just annoys me and I'm not looking forward to it become a bloated version of random crap collection on my system partition. But since I already had to rollback to a previous backup while trying to do this, because I royally messed up my User account, it seems impossible for now.

That link by Cruel is exactly the way I messed it up. It didn't seem to follow the symlink correctly. Might have something to do with the folder Users actually being displayed as "Benutzers" while it's in german, even if the folder is actually still called Users on the hard drive. Heck if I know, it just screwed up everything.

I used symlinks before, the problem is just getting the file into the other location safely, which I haven't managed yet.

That's what I did. Booted from Win7 DVD, used cmd prompt to copy files. It's supposed to work with admin priviledges, but apparently didn't as it failed to copy any system files over. I could use a linux live boot CD, but Linux apparently doesn't carry over all NTFS flags, which might also screw everything up. Oh well, I'll just see if I can work with just the files moved over through the Windows function. Thanks anyway!

Thanks mate, but I already read about half a ton of stuff that Google gives you on that matter. I was actually fucking angry, because I'm typing this after reinstalling Windows 7 FIVE TIMES. For now I settled with just moving my empty profile after reinstalling, making a symlink to it and then merging it with my old data. So far it seems to work, although I had to fiddle with the access list, but that wasn't a problem.

So for now, I left the Users folder where it is, but moved my User Account folder and linked it with a symlink, so it's good enough for my purposes. Thanks to all who tried to help!

EDIT: Haha, I take it back. It doesn FUCKING work.

I'm never convinced this degree of trying to fight the system is worth it. Much easier to keep it where it is (resize partition if necessary) and just backup to somewhere else, if that's your concern. Even if this kinda stuff works, there's enough crappy software that assumes stuff is in C:\users or whatever that it never quite behaves.

Yeah, too much effort to move it, though in theory moving and then symlinking should work. Power, did you try Unstoppable Copier by any chance?

Nah I didn't, I came to the same conclusion as you, though - not worth it. Now I just moved the "Documents", "Pictures" and so on folder to the other partition as intended by the OS. Close enough to my needs, I guess.

Agree strongly with Claws, but I also think you should be *easily* able to designate a home drive for this information (in much the same way you can override the drive where a paging file is stored).

How much space you going to save Paul? Is space even the issue here or am I missing some other subtle objective?

Well the thing is, I have no idea, since I never used Win7 for a prolonged amount of time. But I like keeping my system files and personal files separated in any case. I just don't get the reasoning behind Win7. They FINALLY managed to put all of your personal files and setting into a separate folder, but failed to put that folder outside of the system partition and won't let you do that either... oh well.

On the other hand, have 8 GB RAM now, deactivated the page file alltogether.
