Ok, tried to turn on the PC and got a feeble "POP" noise. Absolutly gutted.

My question is this. Is there an internal fuse that I can replace on these things? Or would I be better off replacing the unit?

I need this in a hurry. So the only localplace open for me tomorow (Sunday) is going to be PC World.

Sorting by price and looking for something in the 650w range has turned OCZ for about £70. Are OCZ any good?

The irony is that my Corsair PSU has a 5 year warenty and a MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. So I could get it repaired / replaced. But I don't have time really.

GRRR! Really shouldn't be spending out after what the tax man did to my paycheque Smiley

I would get your Corsair replaced and buy something cheap to keep you going in the meantime rather than spend £70 on something different.

The pop noise -- and as a field service guy I'm probably not telling you anything new here -- probably means that the fuse wasn't fast enough. So time to get it repaired.

Try to get a spare you can use for the meantime (preferably for free) off of a guy you know that has a PSU with suitable wattage "just lying around".

I've got a 400 watt PSU in my brother's redundant PC. But I don't think it has the outlets for the graphics card. And I don't have any converters to turn a 4 pin molx into an 8 pin PCIe.

Aren't computers fun? Smiley

Guess if time really was of the essence, you could treat yourself to an upgrade, get the corsair replaced, and then sell one of them on eBay

Now that's certainly food for thought.

It's the beautiful random nature of the universe. Technically I can't afford to replace the dam thing this month. But I do need my main PC working.

A good nights sleep and my mind is a little clearer. So one of the things I'll be doing before I go up in the loft, is to see if the power cable is ok. Yes, I know I'm deluding myself a bit. But it's worth a long shot.

OK, quick little update.

It looks like the PSU is drawing too much power and blowing the 5 amp fuse in the IEC lead. So it's time for me to go hunting around for spare 5 amp fuses Smiley

Rippy - I wouldn't recommend changing the fuse. If it's blowing a 5 amp fuse it's drawing a LOT more current than it should (5A @ 240V is like 1200W) and it probably means that there is a short circuit in the powersupply somewhere.

Put in ur bros' psu, just connect the minimum to it and send the corsair back to where u bought it and get it repaired.

If u do have the money, buy a new one and e-bay the corsair once it's repaired. (+1 brahms)

Well what a fun day it's been.

I stripped out the PSU and hoovered the PC case and PSU. Went to B&Q and got spare fuses.

POP!

GRRRR!

Off to PC world. I need 24 pin for the mother board. An 8 pin for the CPU. X2 6 pin for the graphics card. A FDD connection for the sound card. X4 SATA. And at least X2 IDE.

So I found a 500 watt OCZ PSU. But it was a lie  Angry

Claimed 4 SATA. Had only 3. And they were all on one wire. So DVD drives at the top and hard drives at the bottom. Also claimed 6 IDE, only had 3. But kind of worth it to see the look of confusion on the Teck Guy's face.

Now it's time to go into the loft and find thee box for the PSU and send it back for warrantee repair / replacement. I've just got to decide whether to wait it out, or buy a replacement for the short term.

If I get an exact model replacement and still get the original repaired / replaced. Then I already have a recipient lined up to give it a good home.

But I'll be plundering my brother's PC later this evening at the very least Smiley

Well a mixed bag of news on this on.

Scan have eventually confirmed that they have had the power supply delivered. Scan will give you a web page that you can track the progress of your RMA, but it isn't updated that often. I was able to confirm that the parcel had been delivered and signed for a week last Friday through the Parcel Force web site. But it took till the follwoing Wednesday for scan to update it's page. In fact I gave them a call on the Tuesday just fo a bit of piece of mind.

The current status of my PSU is that it's been tested and it's been found faulty. All very well and good, but what about a replacment? Well Scan's RMA web page is currently indicating that they are awaiting stock / credit. Kind of funny considering they are showing them in stock at the moment on the shop web page.

So all I can hope is that the RMA page is behind the times as it has always been, and that there is a replacment unit winging it's way towards me on the cheapest postal option they have. I'd be very supprised if they actually paid for a decent postal return. What would be nice would be some sort of confirmation & comunication from Scan. I suppose I'll have to try and give them a call on Monday.

Really missing my PC  Angry

It's the feedback (lack of) that's begining to wind me up. It might not be a big deal to them but an email by the end of the same working day to let me know the part has arrived. Another to let me know it's been alocated for testing. The test results. And when to expect a replacment.

At the moment it's this vauge "It's in process" feel. So I'll be chasing this up again over the phone. And that can be a stinker as well. Be prepaired to spend some time on hold. But as they have kind of connected you by the aid of automated "press 1 to begin to get pissed off" robot woman, you will be paying money to listen to a ringing tone.

All good fun. I just want a working PSU so that I can find if it's just the PSU that frazzeled, or if there are other things in the PC that took a jolt. I bloody well hope not Sad

There may be light at the end ofthe tunnel. But just for fun, let's reflect.

Saturday 22nd January - PSU blows.

Sunday 23rd January - Try simply replacing 5 amp fuse in plug, no joy.

Tuesday 25th January - After finaly getting through on the phone line, Scan issue RMA number.

Thursday 27th January - PSU given to Parcel Force for delivery to Scan.

Friday 28th January - Parcel Force web site confirms delivery for 9:24am that day.

Monday 31st January - Contact Scan via phone. Scan web site not acknowledging part arrival, but customer advisor thinks he recognises the signiture name for the delivery as some one who works there.

Tuesday 1st February - By end of working day, get email to let me know that my RMA is "Awaiting Replacment / Credit". And that "We can confirm your returned goods have now been tested by our technicians." At this point, I've got assume I'm getting a replacment right? The click link for more info simply shows a tick by "Awaiting Replacment / Credit".

Monday 7th February - Get an email at the end of the working day to let me know that my RMA is "Completed", and that "We can confirm your returned goods have now been fully processed and replacements issued / refund authorised". Again the same link to the RMA tracking page. Not that clear as to what is going on. Eventually find that there is now an "Outgoing invoice number". After visiting another part of scan's site, find that the new invoice has been authorised, but not picked.

Tuesday 8th February - Navigate my way through scan's web site and find that the outgoing invoice has now been picked and dispatched. Helpfull link to DPD, but the invoice number isn't recognised.

Today 9th February - Checking the DPD web site confirms that at 00:07 "Your parcel has been received at our sortation hub". And at 06:02 "Your parcel has arrived at the local depot".

So it's taken less than two weeks for scan to turn the warenty return around. With a bit of luck I'll have the PSU by end of working day. So hopefully nothing else in the PC has been damage and everything will work as soon as the power is back in. The G4 has been too slow to be a viable alternativ. Trying to view a youtube page on safari has resulted in masivly stuttery play back. Even with a video fully spooled. The laptop has been a bit of a life line. Thankfully there were some fairly recent backups of my work documentation for me to use. But trying to get used to this keyboard has been a swine. Still miss-keying now.

Anyway, fingers crossed for the PSU arriving today and everything working again by this evening.
