*Laptop problems*

Be careful when fixing it you don't "accidentally" spill your tea over it because you might have to claim on the insurance for a new one and that is loads of hassle Wink

Yeah - we had a terrible accident at home over christmas, my mum slipped on the ice. She could have hurt herself if it wasn't for the fact her laptop broke her fall!

Ours wasn't with the home insurance - we took the extended cover on the laptop because I got staff discount at the time. But I'm sure many home insurance policies cover you for accidental damage, should something be accidentally damaged.

Right, I'm persisting with this just because its pissing me off that I can't figure out whats going on.

So today I removed the heatsink and fan whatsname, removed the thermal paste (shit was so badly applied I'm really not surprised I had heat problems back in the day) and reapplied, not really expecting anything to happen and sure enough, I wasn't surprised.

So far I've removed all the hardware and reseated, dusted, cleaned and generally spruced up before putting it back, which is obviously pointing me back in the software problem. I found something on the Dell forums that said if you power on whilst holding the FN button it runs a diagnostic tool which has been running for 15 minutes so far with nothing productive happening.

Another 2 possible errors have presented themselves via the Dell forums too; sometimes the mobo can short out the AC connector which means you can only boot from the battery which is a massive problem for me as the battery hasn't held a charge for 6 months odd now Tongue, the solution for that issue is to buy a new £100 battery and replace the mobo which is apparently around  a £600 job. The other one is that apparently Windows stores data in the RAM when in sleep mode and sometimes fails to clear it when waking up or some shit. Will try the suggested solution (of holding down the power button for 30 seconds, waiting 10 seconds and then powering on again) after the diagnostic tool has run, but if I'm honest, I'm skeptical...

I sorted out the cooling on my XPS M1330 recently, did a copper mod too -  replacing the crappy thermal pads between the heatpipe and northbridge / gpu with little squares of copper sheet, and used Arctic Silver 5 throughout. CPU and GPU both run around 15 degrees cooler now! Giving the cooling fins a squirt with the air can helped too - mine was clogged up with cat fur and dust.

Parts wise you're actually in luck, it's a popular laptop. Replacement mobos are on ebay for under £200, or you can pick up spares/repair laptops with broken screens etc. New batteries can be had for under £30. If it's just the power connector that's dodgy, even better - it's on a separate PCB so you can replace that bit for under £50.

I've got a perfectly good 12" dual core lappy that just needs a new fan (bearings are completely shot, it's unbearable to listen to), but because it's a Chinese brand I just can't get the parts.

I also seem to be having problems with my laptop, the screen keeps freezing every few seconds and I'm getting a few graphical artefacts in window borders. It's a brand new laptop with a completely fresh install of Ubuntu, but I think the problem started after I installed the proprietary ATI gfx drivers. The screen doesn't if i'm not running anything, but when I launch Eclipse or Chrome it gets annoying again. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall the drivers or a possible fix? I haven't quite figured my way around linux yet.

What is your card? Most ATI linux drivers for hd 5xxx cards are terrible. None of them would install or run correctly, but fortunately they released a new version a week ago and it's far better
