DA:O was released end of '09; DA:O-Awakenings (fucking stupid title) was out in 2010 but wasn't as good imo.

F:NV gets hella good the further into it you go and I'm going to change my mind and have this as my runner up Tongue. It's so good I'd totally forgotten about it!

I liked it too, but haters hate, especially CoD on these forums. Multiplayer is tolerable now that I've got a system that can run it too.

Minecraft wasn't 'released', and it's been around since 2009 anyway, so probably can't count that.

Only 2 games I've enjoyed released this year are Ass Cred 2 and Super Meat Boy, so one of them.

Ok...games that were released this year that I have played:

Mass Effect 2 - brilliant game, played the first one and then the second fairly soon afterwards. never played many RPGs before then and thought it was excellent.

Tropico 3 - enjoyed playing this, a very similar style & humour to the original games which I loved. need to finish off the campaign at some point.

Alien vs. Predator - hated it, forced my way through the single player but gave up - don't think I got very far into it. never tried the MP.

Bad Company 2 - awesome game. fairly rubbishy campaign but the MP is excellent (except when disco is on the other team and tank whoring). One of the few FPS games I've actually felt like I was pretty good at (knifing people is fun!)

Metro 2033 - bought this on a whim because it was £5 and others were recommending it so strongly. played the campaign this week. there were a few odd bugs and some annoying parts (killing an enemy and it shoots across the screen, or having an enemy inside you so you can't shoot it) but one of the best single player FPSs I've played this year. It had a good atmosphere and wasn't as scary as I was expecting (which is a good thing Cheesy )

Just Cause 2 - was really looking forward to this having seen some of the hilarious youtube clips of people being dragged behind planes etc. An amazingly pretty game - the landscapes were amazing. Not sure why I havn't played it more tbh. Will definitely be picking it up again in 2011.

Starcraft II - used to love old school RTS games like red alert 2 etc. but I was severely put off by the new C&C and RA games. Bought SC2 because of all the hype. Havn't finished the SP yet, and only played a few MP games but really enjoying it. Again - another one to pick up and finish next year.

Worms: Reloaded - spent so many hours playing worms 2 when I was in 6th form. Had some good multiplayer games with people on it but didn't think it brought anything particularly special to the table and thought the MP was really buggy and unintuitive.

Civilisation V - bought at release, not as good as I was hoping it would be. Definitely some nice additions, but a lot of good stuff was taken out. They also really messed up the multiplayer - like if a player drops everyone has to quit and re-load it again. Was hoping they would have sorted that as it was pretty bad in Civ 4 as well. It's also really resource intensive so can't play it on low spec pc's like you could with Civ 4.

Dead Rising 2 - a lot of fun initially, but I thought that the boss fights were pretty hard and sometimes running/fighting through the zombies became frustrating and annoying.

Medal of Honor - can hardly remember playing the singleplayer, vague recollections were that it was ok. I think I played about 20 minutes of the multiplayer but I'd rather play it with people than on my own.

Fallout: New Vegas - only started playing it this week. am enjoying it so far but sometimes the fights are really frustrating.

Super Meat Boy - only played a few levels of it. looks like a silly game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - actually pretty surprised by this, thought it was pretty good. I really liked shooting the zombies as the president at the end (and in the multiplayer). Not tried the actual MP yet, would be good to play it with people one night.

Alien Swarm - thought this deserved a mention. pretty good game considering it was free!

I'm sure there's lots of other smaller games that have been released this year that I have enjoyed - I just went down the wikipedia list and reeled off the ones I remember playing. Chime for example was a charming little game.

As for the top games:
Bad Company 2
Starcraft II
Mass Effect 2

Some good games; no real priority, nothing stood out as "dammit beyond dying you must play this". Bugger me so many sequels though...

Metro 2033 - Not finished the SP yet, for goodness knows what reason, it's like the last level. Still utterly fun though up to that point.

Bad Company 2 + Vietnam - Late to the party, but loads of fun in multiplayer. The SP is passable and helps you to learn the weapons a bit. Vehicles, large maps and always team based gameplay with no silly perks appeals. One issue is the stupid levelling system, go go gimped new players...urg.

Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising - Excellent expansion pack since I thoroughly enjoy the singleplayer; just so over the top action. Can be quite hard too which is great.

Fallout: New Vegas - Everything Fallout 3 fell down on (factions interacting, banal main plot, out of character factions, some terrible weapon selections and the game being damn easy with insta-stimpacks, and also terrible companions) was improved and bettered. An interesting world with actual fascinating intrigue and a better enemy faction of your choice. Improved massively with a radio mod for more tracks though.

Mass Effect 2 - Fast paced RPG-ness. The combat/RPG levelling was to me oversimplified and the combat, if not especially difficult, was certainly frustrating in places since it is basically only you killing things and you get limited ammo. Still apart from some blatant plot hiccups (bloody idiot shadow man) it had some more fascinating characters and places to visit, and I still love the voiceacting and sheer character of the games. Mining minigame can bugger off though, so much wasted time on that.

BioShock 2 - A good sequel - enjoyable levels, nice upgrades this time (fear my drill and named sentry bots!), a more coherent plot throughout and some very inventive work put into some parts of the game and it certainly is much more fun to play.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat - A great end to the first set of STALKER games (they're making STALKER 2 now right?), being part of the military gives me the ample canon for a faction I otherwise was fascinated with but never got to talk to, the levels were well tuned and some more demanding decisions being made of the player to actively do one thing or another, rather then general side missions. Was fun to decide what to do; and the AI was great this time (more times you played in a group, was good).

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth - Like Leftism said, a damn fun game. Not too challenging, but was rewarding and seeing you move around more actively was just more pleasing then static screens. No courtroom drama is a real shame, but it still pulled something similar off, and was much better then the last Ace Attorney game.

Assassin's Creed II - Still playing, but damn it is so much better then the first game. Sadly no skippable cut-scenes still, but they're not hours long either (still a shame if you exit and have to re-watch them again). Extra assassination missions outside of the main plot and more combat moves/enemy types make it very fun; you really feel you have the power to kill anyone this time.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver - Yes, addictive handheld nostalgic (but still good) play-on-the-bus fun. Best game in the series is still Gold and Silver, and this remake captures most of that again. Now I am just waiting for Black and White... Wink

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - Singleplayer == good clean, if very predictable levels (mainly) and utterly unsatisfying plot-wise. MP still makes me wince, and I dare not go back there.

Mount and Blade: Warband - Multiplayer is a damn fun addition to the game actually - the c-rpg mod makes it a wee bit more persistent and less wacky then the normal one (which is still pretty fun). The revised map and actions in the game are okay too - much better then the original, more balanced, and you can become king/queen now, wheee Smiley

Got to play more of: Alpha Protocol (why haven't I played this? just...kinda left the disk and never installed it!), Napoleon: Total War, Civilization 5 (this just does not appeal still for some reason; I think I love civ4 that much more) Just Cause 2, Batman Arkham Asylum (I only brought it this year...not even booted it up), Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (still playing...is it all a dream again? or is this going to go mental and be actually real?) and others.

Still not brought Golden Sun: Dark Dawn or Super Scribblenauts yet though. I've also played a wee bit too much AI War, League of Legends and Team Fortress 2 from earlier years, heh.

Shall we necro? (YEAH IM ALSO BORED BECAUSE MY NEW MAINBOARDS STILL NOT HERE)

All in all, this was a good year for videogames, there were some big hits and I probably bought more games this year than I did ever before. I probably spent even more in League of Legends sadly, not my fault they bring out new skins for Karthus and Kogmaw I swear :<

So yeah whatever heres my top 10:

1. Limbo

By far the best experience Ive had in a videogame in a looong time. I like atmospheric mystic games that want you to tell the story and not the other way around (think SOTC) and just as Metro last year this one delivered. What I really enjoy in a game is the music and Limbo had really fitting ambient sounds, I even bought the "soundtrack" on iTunes. Really great little game and I eagerly await Playdeads next project!

2. Portal 2

Theres not much to say here. Its your typical Valve-magic and Id go out as far as to compare them to Pixar in terms of giving their animated characters a soul. It was definitely a stepup from the first "experimental" Portalgame and allthough it dragged a bit long in the end the ending was worth it. Co-op was a neat addition!

3. Eeus Dx: Ruman Hevolution

Oops I forgot this one. And I would have liked it alot more if the last 5 minutes of the game didnt ignore any decision you made throughout the game. The bossfights I didnt mind that much because I was playing a gunslinger but to see the game offer you an ending and totally ignoring if you were a good or a bad guy was such an insult to the 30 hours I invested into the story. Other than that the game is great and had outstanding dialogue and voice acting and an immersive, though limited world.

4. Gears of War 3

Didnt really have this on my radar at all since the first 2 werent available here but this one somehow got through?! I played the first one on PC and saw the second one being played on Youtube so I knew the storyline. 3 is a great wrapup and has its moments, out of all the shootygames this year the best singleplayerexperience by far. The multiplayer is great and I would still play it if I wouldnt suck so bad on a gamepad and ragequit all the time. Its definitely something else from the typical multiplayer FPS and requires alot more skill.

5. Crysis 2

Had a great storyline and eventhough it didnt have this really open world to run around like the first one, it still gave you enough freedom to do your own thing and not be restricted to walk in a pregiven line to get to the next objective which did set this game appart from all the other blockbuster shooters that came out. Levels themselves and destroyed Manhattan looked amazing in the new engine. Multiplayer is fun.

6. Modern Warfare 3

Mostly for the great singleplayer, which gave a good ending to the Modern Warfare storyline. Multiplayer hasnt changed that much but I do applaud them for the new Kill Confirmed mode which is alot of fun!

7. Dungeon Defenders

Its a great mixture of Diablo-esque Action RPG and Tower Defense combined in a somewhat MMO-world where theres a real economy going on. I usually dont enjoy Action RPGs but combigned with the latter two elements it really worked out. Its alot of fun when playing with friends and once you reach max level on a character you got a whole new game ahead where its suddenly about maximizing your characters potential through mentioned economy system. I do not like the way they push out new content as most of it isnt free but they listen to the community and fix bugs really quick. I hope this appears in the holiday sale so more people will get it!

8. Skyrim

Since I havent finished it and probably start a new savegame cause I havent touched it in a while I dont know how much I like it by now. It has great visuals and does feel epic with the landscapes and the orchestral score and the millions of storylines you can get lost in, but like I said I didnt invest enough time into it to really do it justice. And I swear to god if people dont stop making the arrowjoke... better watch out, America

9. Brink

I enjoyed Brink and I like the concept behind it but the devs really killed the community with their shitty support for both patches and the ATI cards. Until I got my 560Ti in octobre I wasnt able to run this game at all and now the community is pretty much dead. Real shame, just like RPS wrote in their recap a few days ago, it deserves mentioning because in the FPS market which hasnt been this stale in a while it tried to bring in new elements. Sadly they didnt work out but thats the devs fault for not giving it the proper support it needed.

10. Battlefield 3

The game was such a disappointment in my opinion because its so unfinished. Compare it to MW3 where Infinity Ward and (then additionally) Sledgehammer knew exactly they had 2 years to bring out a new Modern Warfare title. The result was a solid shooter, that didnt pull punches but was good. In BF3 however you can really feel how EA pushed Dice so hard to bring this out 2011, and now after 2 months and several patches its still buggy and horribly unbalanced. I know you shouldnt expect anything else from a Battlefield game, but I was really excited for this game (and even upgraded my graphics card just for that) and to see it be so unfinished and buggy was a slap to the face. Ive invested enough time into it to get my moneys worth but it could have been alot better if they would have waited more and wouldnt have tried to beat CoD in sales (which they didnt obviously duh)

Honorable mention goes to League of Legends which didnt came out this year but I play it everyday and they really stepped it up with all the content and balance changes they brought out in 2011. They had some facepalm-moments like pre-nerf Vayne or Brand but all in all, good stuff and a great developer that really listens to its (paying) community.

TL;DR League of Legends duh

EDIT: I forgot Deus Ex ooooops

Red Dead Redemption.

Or if we're being serious, Frozen Synapse or I guess, Battlefield 3.
