I haven't actually got round to playing the early deus exs, was it really that disappointing? Aside from the crappy boss fights and bad ending I really enjoyed my time with it. The only other complaint i've heard is the no weapon skills thing but I think that was something that needed dropping.

I was totally disappointed that dead island turned out to be a borderlands clone but once you adjust to that its better than borderlands and fun to muck about with at least.

Idk, what I always hated about these games was like, having to choose your class based upon almost 0 information as you start. Like, whilst at the time I might fancy being a mage, what's the point in the majority of situations when you can just swing your sword?

Only exception being Warcraft as it's pretty much all the same anyway.

This. I hate this so much in any game where you have to allocate/distribute skills/points or whatever. I spend more time trying to think what the consequences of being a particular class/build is rather than actually playing/enjoying the game - and most of the time it doesn't really make any difference anyway!

Honestly I don't think that they were bad games. They were fun and I can see why people enjoyed them. It must be a personal thing but for me I had horrible feelings of disappointment playing both of them.

Dead Island was like a boring version of L4D without the climax battles, I loved the weapon system but it never felt like you were battling the horde like in L4D, you were just kicking a couple of zombies repeatedly. The "Quests" were a joke and the story is an even bigger one. I understand the story being shit but they had such a good opportunity to make some awesome scenarios and they just didn't. Bottom line is it could've been so much more and it ticks me off so much.

Deus Ex 3 was, imo a shadow of the original. Yes Combat is no longer clunky, everything looks cool and all that jazz. But the cover system? Spending the majority of the game in the hacking mini-game? Infinite dartgun and pistol ammo? On top of that the augment system barely affected the game at all for me, it just wasn't important because you had perfect aim with everything anyway and let's be honest it's not hard to hit people in the head when you can see them around corners. Probably nostalgia but I loved the original and playing Human Revolution felt like a huge dumbing down.

As for the whole class/skill point issue, I actually really enjoy it. It does lead to me playing for an hour and realising I hate my character but for some reason I still love it.

The footage of Skyrim looks good. Really good. I just wonder if it's going to suffer from Oblivion syndrome, the tedium of the world was my major complaint in Oblivion and though it sounds like they're going to alleviate that somewhat (more/new voice actors, more stuff to do etc) I can't help but get the feeling that it's going to be like Oblivion ie. Mouse1 Mouse1 Mouse1 Mouse1 Mouse1 oh he's dead now. The spell system does look really nice but again it might just devolve into endless hadoukens, which is my main problem with Oblivion. Nothing seemed weak against anything, there were no tactics besides circle strafe and Mouse1 with Dragons and more combos of weapons/spells it could all change. But that nagging feeling of potential disappointment still stays with me.

Have you been playing dead island in coop? I probably wouldn't bother with singleplayer. The quests are fairly poor but they are much improved over borderlands stuff. I find it more satisfying than l4d, it lacks the spectacle but the combat is actually meaningful instead of lol headshot everything or poke them once with melee. it does lose the sense of cooperative survival except when you go up against some of the specials though, I think if they'd tried they could have made some l4d set pieces at certain points. I just reached chapter 7 and the zombie numbers are increasing all the time, what was once a road with 2 walkers hanging out now has 10 around a ram and others growling down side streets. I think their main problem was hyping shit with that trailer if they'd just said borderlands clone to start with they wouldn't be getting so much hate.

You can avoid hacking by blowing open a lot of doors, or finding the passwords, but I do think its an issue though that hacking gives the most xp forcing you down that route for the sake of more augments overall, same with non-lethal, non-lethal is the clearly better and harder to do but the xp bonuses are pretty crazy.

I really disagree with skills that improve specific weapon accuracy, especially when your dude is a cyborg with brain implants. From a lore point of view he downloads new control software for whatever gun. from a design standpoint most players are probably just going to end up super good at pistols and turn their noses up at any late game weaponry you present them with. They did actually try to make some general weapon augments on the arms but there were only 4 which didn't give it any depth to really specialise as a guns guy. The augment system did feel slightly unfinished to me like there were a bunch of useless hacking augments and the stealth markers which could have been removed in favour of more gun augments, which in turn could have meant you started off a bit crapper at shooting. Did also feel like the stealth augments were useless aside from double punch and maybe upgraded radar, and hacking only ever required capture and a little stealth, I don't think they got the balance right for fortify to be a good strategy and inspect is one of the worst wastes of praxis.

Finished the main questline and here are my thoughts

It was really fun. Not as involving storywise as Oblivion was but there was a lot more action to keep me interested. Though it lacks some diversity.

Dragon fights are great for the most part but can be really frustrating at the start when you don't have the special dragonrend shout which makes dragons land so you can fuck them up. Once you have that shout though, it's a fairer fight. The fights don't seem scripted in an ultimate sense but they do kinda do the same thing every time. Fly around for a bit, land, then take off again so it's kinda repetitive

I did pretty much the whole thing as a full on mage with heavy armor. Switching between full Destruction magic, Restoration to heal myself and a mace with shield. it felt pretty balanced to me, though I wish there was a way to save loadouts and quickly switch between them because the MENUS ARE AWFUL!

the menus are console menus. I love the game, I've barely left falkreath hold, 100%d it except for dragons that hadn't moved in at that point. Just 8 more holds to go :/. I'm also at level 25 already, the reviews said there is not much levelled content but that is complete lies. The problem I have with such an approach is I explore every where so level matching everything to me means I'm going to hit max level (50 i think) by the time i've cleared out 2 holds of 9. Would have been a better game for me if we went back to the old system of some places just being badass and scary that you don't stand a chance of fighting in if you enter early on. That would also gives thieves something to do other than robbing everyone. Stealthing through villagers houses is boring, and stealthing through dungeons is pointless because everything is matched to my level so it can all die.

Love everything else, I just hope patch 1 fixes the crap menus, and maybe dlc 1 instead of horse armour can be horse combat lol. That or I will get a mod for it so I have something to do after hitting the level cap. where is the horse combat seriously? They made some really great additions but the really obviously missing one is mounted combat. The ocarina of time had mounted combat and that game is what 15 years old?

everything i've seen of the world is so much better than their fallout games, and I really liked new vegas (although that was obsidian). I just want some clear danger zones. I suppose if you are nailing dragons with barely any help from that start you are supposed to be an ultimate badass but it makes the game suffer when there is nothing to fear. The only stuff remotely dangerous so far are the giants and their mammoths but you can still pick them off thanks to levelling if you plan it right.

Magic is horrendously unbalanced. Frost magic is op when you aren't a nord, they possibly designed the games with nords in mind but for anyone without the racial resistance frost mages are easily the worst to fight and it makes necromancers and vampires annoying too. They tend to just one hit hadouken me and frost slows you down as well so you can't dodge. Fire is slightly less dangerous and I only tend to die from it when I've got way too close to a fire mage. Storm mages are pants, lightning spells are anti-mage though so its understandable they don't pose much of a threat to me. Perhaps given that it does stamina damage though frost is meant to be anti-thief, maybe someone else playing a warrior could confirm that frost isn't so bad as another class? Thing is i don't use much stamina though its the lack of movement and the damage output that usually gets me.

I'm playing a thief and I would love to level up my stealth and do some stealthing but there's just 0 point when you could just kill everything instead. Thief would be so much more amazing if I could stealth into hostile fortresses steal all their loot and then quietly run away for profit and uber weapons. Then go back and kill them all later at a higher level.

Pandering to consoles is ruining the game (not enough to make me stop enjoying it but still), at least we have mods to fix it though

ha well I mean thats fine at that level you should be able to kill giants. I just dislike that I too can kill them with a fairly shitty bow. I do about 30~ damage a shot, archery is at 70 and my light armour is just elven with barely 30 skill. To be fair killing them for me mostly involves lots of running and then hiding behind a rock they take forever to walk round to my side, so i'm not exactly ready for a full on confrontation.

I'm glad that there are some things in that make me work to fight them, but the excess of levelled content in dungeons is just lazy. Ideally for me you should be able to explore most of world without problem but caves and such should mostly be low level content whilst fortresses and larger old ruins are high level, with fairly obvious warnings to stay away. Then I could sneak in the high level stuff as a thief or a mage could go invisible etc. I suppose if theres too many high level places the game would become dull at lower levels. So there would have to be a smaller number of truly dangerous places but I think that could work as like the regions epic dungeon.

For instance one of falkreaths more dangerous places was a keep full of vampires, it wasn't that big or impressive on the outside and the inside was a standard dirty keep. Its so far out of the way that it wouldn't hurt low level players for it to be ludicrously dangerous. I would have liked to have seen it as a mighty yet hidden vampire fortress with slightly more plush interiors and some attempt at grandeur. With the hordes of vampires inside actually posing a serious threat to the player and the region. Given that falkreath is a small hold the vampires actually outnumbered all the townsfolk and guards put together. I was sent there by someone to kill them but it was so throwaway, just a misc quest to quietly go into the mountains and slaughter a keep full of vampires.

This may be a problem with falkreath hold though, its generally designed as a smaller low level area with nothing that interesting and even the jarl only gives out misc quests, it has 2 side quests both of which get you out of falkreath hold as fast as they can. I just wish hadn't hit level 25 clearing it, I suppose at least autolevelling will keep the other areas interesting until I hit the level cap.
