That is also the reason I still don't know what the heck "pretentious" means. Everyone just using it as some kind of derogatory term regarding the depth (?) of some piece of art or something. I DUNNO MAN!!!

So you think I don't know what it is supposed to mean? "Full of pretense or pretension" well that's fucking rich, I wonder what "hideous" means.

What I meant is, people are using it whenever they want to sound smart whether it fits or not. So I've neven been able to pick up on the cases where it is actually fitting to use this term. And basically, if you learn a foreign language it's better to go with the context, rather than what it says in the dictionary, so that doesn't really help.

EDIT: Anyway, what I got so far (people on RPS just LOVE spamming this word). It means something is trying to appear deep/meaningful/insightful when it's totally not (for the reviewers POV in this case). Basically making it a fancy way of saying "THIS TOTALLY SUCKS IMO". Am I correct?

People whip out the 'PRETENTIOUS CRAP' when there's someone/thing attempts to be meaningful and either:

a) Guy doesn't get it, therefore it's full of shit.
b) Guy doesn't like it, therefore it's full of shit.
c) Guy doesn't know what pretentious means, therefore he's full of shit.

Hm, pretentious is a difficult world to define, but I shall try.

I would say, something that feels itself superior because of self-percieved intelligence or importance, that is actually no better than average. Or maybe, something that uses percieved high-class things to attempt to make itself appear of better quality where the base content is nothing special.

I use it as a sort of general 'trying too hard' word, generally in the context of art/arthouse films/Lost. One man's pretentious is another man's genius, so it's objectively down to taste and/or how much bullshit you're prepared to take from JJ Abrams.

Serious Sam is unpretentious, you just get given a gigantic gun and get told to go over there and kill things.

If someone made a Serious Sam clone, identical gameplay wise, that used classical music and philosophical quotes between levels, and considered itself superior thus, that would be pretentious.

games with well written and extensive plots (pnauts) and interactive stories (dear esther) and very similar to movies, different but superior in a number of ways. But why limit to just movie like games there are art games out there where its the presentation or maybe the mechanics or whatever. Also this is the stupid argument we all had with roger ebert why are we having it again. Rant said I would like to see more games with good, profound writing capable of evoking more emotions than rage and adrenaline. I'm just going to cry myself to sleep until dear esther HD is finished.

Play Silent Hill 2. Try to put up with the bad controls and dodgy camera angles, it's worth it for the story. IMO it has the best story in any game I've ever played, and better than most movies I've seen. It does a lot of things storywise that are specific to games and couldn't have been done if it had been a movie. It's hard to be more specific without going into spoiler territory, but trust me, it's good.

Even Yahtzee likes it.

The Graveyard is simultaneously one of the most simple and thoughtful games I've ever 'played'. If Silent Hill 2 is encroaching on film's definition of art (and it is) then The Graveyard is a modern art piece that is cleverer than anything in any gallery I've seen.

That tract is originally from Silent Hill 2 Gany, you should play it. You'd love it if you enjoyed the movie. I thought the movie was ok (it was definitely good by the standards of video game movies) but it had none of the subtleties of the games. In Silent Hill 2 a lot of the story is implied and hinted at, while in the movie they just flat out tell you everything and there is almost no mystery.
