As title, I updated my Gpx card from an Nvidia 8800GTX to a Ati 5850, now TF2 won't load. Symptoms are: Start it from any shortcut, it plays the valvehead vid then sits there doing nothing with the windows loading cursor (swirling circle), until windows deams it unresponsive.
Everything else is fine, was playing BF:BC2 on it no probs and it benches stably.
Nvidia Drivers were fully cleaned before the switchover (uninstalled from control panel, then used DriverCleaner in safe mode), and fresh latest Catalyst drivers put on (10.10)
Tried removing TF2 from the steam cloud, and cleaning all the startup params and the cfg,resource,scripts directorys, no joy. Also verified all files correctly.

Maybe try a fresh install of TF2?

I had a similar problem with L4D2 recently when I upgraded my graphics card.
This fix worked for me:

1. Close Steam if running
2. Go to your Steam\Steamapps folder
3. Delete left 4 dead 2 client.ncf
4. Delete client.dll from your steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\bin folder
5. Start Steam
6. Right click on L4D2 and validate the game
7. After validation is complete, right click on the game and choose Install
8. Let it redownload the file and install it properly

From this thread in the L4D2 forums.

Just replace where it says 'left 4 dead 2' with 'tf2'. Worth a shot. If this doesn't work, I'd go with Dibble's suggestion.

Agree with Emu and Dibble.

Hell, I had trouble just on a monitor change (TF2 wise)....re-install is the safest bet if nothing else works.

It used to do that on my laptop, no idea why but I found disabling the intro videos worked; try starting with -novid in the startup line params.

I had a similar problem where TF2 wouldn't start from the shortcut. I fixed it by just going to my steam library and loading it from there.. doubt it's the same thing but worth a shot I guess.

There's a command line switch (that you add from the launch options) that restarts all of the graphics settings etc. - that might be worth a shot, I can't remember what it is but I'm sure a google search will find it.

-autoconfig isn't it?

edit - That wipes all your cfgs so be sure to back them up first .

edit edit - And remove all other launch options

Derp Derp used control+f to search for game cache

Fixed, but only with a full 6GB nuke and redownload overnight. Tried all the suggestions here without any joy.
