As I said in the other thread, I will be buying elsewhere as much as possible! No more steam for me unless a game is ONLY available there and I really want it. I don't like the idea of loosing everything just on the whim of a support guy who should know better / be trained better.

Firstly, I'm very happy to hear that you've got access to you account again.

But I would sugest that you still publish your experiance. If you or anyone else had rolled over with the attitude of "I'll never get my stuff back", then you would be out of your account and out of pocket. Why should Valve go for the cannon to kill a mosquito approche? It wasn't your fault. You did nothing wrong. Yet you still lost out.

I don't care how good an offer Steam may make in the future. I'll stick to buying my games on disk.

Also, to be frank, many of you are overreacting and display a skewed view on the matter.
For one it appears that PayPal has some joint guilt on that fiasco. I also maintain that some of that might have been resolved more quickly if Deadly had involved PayPal earlier (esp. the first time). On top (and in light) of that I don't consider 3-4 days to clear up such a problem not an outrageous amount of time.

The main criticism which could (and rightfully should) be made would be that Steam locked the account without any warning and without trying to resolve the matter before taking drastic measures. This would certainly be advisable and helpful for both sides ("Dear customer, your payment fell through, please contact support within 14 days otherwise your account will be locked").

The fact that Steam locks an account seems quite drastic on one hand, but then again what other means do they have to punish potential fraudulent actions (which was not the case here)? Sure, you could say if a payment falls through Steam could simply lock that game. However, by then a game has been downloaded. Some games apparently are playable offline (as somebody ... Disco? ... mentioned in the shoutbox yesterday). Games can easily be gifted to another account. In the time between downloading a game and Steam locking it somebody might have played it through. Also in many cases Steam will not be able to pursue the breach of a sale contract (easily).

Why should failed payment automatically lead to a locked account, even within 14 days? The onus should not be on the customer here. This is a very simple transaction : you trade money for the game. If it fails, they no longer have the game.

This doesn't punish anything. The problem is that access to a game may need to be revoked after a period of time (a payment bounced, a payment was later discovered to be fraudulent). You're right that it may have already been played, but there is no real fix for this. The most appropriate response seems to be to bar access to the game, rather than lock the entire account.

I agree with Claws.

Also, the main point Tea, is that an entire account was locked (not just the disputed game) and would have remained so if Sam hadn't have argued. Steam even fobbed him off a couple of times - and Sam was not in the best position to sort it out. Steam / Valve should have better dialogue with merchants like PayPal - blaming the customer is the wrong action to take in this instance!

^^ That. Its an automated process, which protects valve against scripted fraudulent purchases. Most e-commerce will have it.  Log-in to buy, dodgy sale?, account locked out.  It's just unfortunate it encomapasses your ability to play games in valves case.

The only fault is the lack of proactive response from valve.

Maybe they are understaffed, maybe they don't care, who knows....

Read up on this now Deadly. I'd say a 2 day wait for the second response is amazingly bad, and it was poor how the first person couldn't provide more then a canned response.

I'm also really concerned that if my credit card ever got rejected for any odd reason (and pray the gods of the internet don't do anything wrong when I try and use it) I'll get my account deactivated as a "precaution", which is just...what? What other kind of company does this to someone? Gah! Sad

We'll soon see I guess if it happens again, Paypal or not.
