Hey all,

I am currently on the hunt for a laptop that is around 350 before vat. Im looking for the best spec I can get.

I basically want it for watching hd movies through the laptop on the tv and a bit of internet browsing and playing a few old games. It will also get used more when I move back to Australia as my pc will be on a boat for 3 months.


I have eyed these four as potentials

out of all of these which would you go for based on hardware spec only?

Or is there something else you would recommend in that price range?

Any help will be much appreciated as I will be ordering tomorrow.

Go for the Microdirect one, it has 4Gb RAM and ATi 4650 Graphics which will mean you'll be able to run TF2 on it.  Whatever you do don't get a laptop with Intel graphics if you want to play games on it

I got a Dell XPS M1350 or something, its good, but overheats like a bitch. So thats what I'd look out for, something that doesn't cook itself every 2 hours.

Hz - It's an M1330, I've got one too (In blood red )
It does get hot, laps are a no-no but so long as you use it on a flat surface so there's airflow to the vents underneath it's ok. If you can get one of those laptop cooler stands even better.

Personally I use an A4 hardback book (about dinosaurs).

There's also a mod you can do, replacing the shitty heat pad that connects the gpu to the cooling heatpipe with a bit of solid copper.

It's a M1530, I'm typing on it now and its got it written at the top .

But yeah, I read some reviews (after I bought it) and this is especially bad for overheating. I think I used to use a cooling mat on top of some DVDs and it still got so hot you could barely touch the metal bit on the keyboard after a while.

good job my mate runs a company that does exactly that. Ill just give  him the dimensions and a brief design and get it sorted out that way. Well the link has been passed to my boss so it should be ordered any min now. It seemed like the best spec on that price range by a long way with it being reduced from 800.

I'd be a bit aprehensive about wrapping it in vinyl tbh, it goes back to the heat thing; I guess the plastic wouldn't let the heat disapate as easy as the metal/plastic casing and you could end up cooking it from the inside out...

Just a thought, I could be wrong though.

They're usually made of plastic anyway I think. You'd probably only want to put a vinyl screen on the top of the case probably anyway

yeah i may give it a good kicking and see how hot it gets before i go down the cover it all up route. if it does run really hot then i guess i will just have to never leave the house with it for fear of ridicule. That or just pretend ive borrowed it off the missus when ever anyone randomly pukes or has a seizure after seeing it.

The main area that mine got hot was around the mouse pad/bottom of the keyboard/palm rest area which is why I'd be hesitant to cover that area. A bit of vinyl on top of the case probably wouldn't do any harm though .

turns out they cant find the laptop. so im gonna cancel the order today and get this one ordered instead
