Was the first duke nukem even good? I think I was a child at the time it came out, and even then I wasn't that impressed.
As Finaldeath said, it came out at the same time as the original Quake (1995?) and I bought both games.  Quake was way ahead graphicly but Duke Nukem had a sense of humour and far more varied levels, not to mention the weapons, baddies etc.  A remake of the original would be good.

I remember the end of a couple of the boss fights, always a crude and funny cut scene

I don't know what to think.
Like Sonic said the ingame footage looked very cool.
But we don't know how the game will be like in the end.

Let see if they can make something out of it.

I also like games that aren't that serious and all like
COD 2010

Duke was released before Quake (they were released half a year apart). At the time it was groundbreaking, as it has already been pointed out, though the engine basically had more in common with Doom than Quake.

What made it stand out besides the technical aspects were the subversive humor which was woven throughout the game, in level design, weapons and - most famously - the one-liners, which were ROFL.

Also it was huge fun to play on LAN parties because of the ridiculous weapons (nothing like shrinking and squishing your opponent).

And yes, the first videos of the DNF suggested a more technically sophisticated game, at that time promising huge eye-candy. At this time I think everybody took for granted that the game would retain the humor and attitude of DN3D and marry that with a top-engine (by then not only Quake had been, but games like Unreal and Half-Life appeared on the horizon), which IMHO was very much the cause of creating the hype and anticipation, which still carries on today.

As such the game can very much live up to the expectations if the developers are able to keep the core aspect - the humor and badassness of DN3D - intact. The technical aspect is pretty much secondary and with the existing engines today should not be too much of a problem. So DNF - should it really ever hit shelves - can still be anything from a huge hit to a total flop. But neither is guaranteed. It doesn't have to be a certified hit just because it's DN, nor does it have to be a certified flop just because it took 13+ years to finally be finished.

That's pretty much what my remark with TF2 was aiming at: It doesn't matter how long a game takes to be developed. All that matters is if they get it right.

BTW: If you want another example for an epic development time you can also look at Prey, which took 11 years.
Never played it, so I don't know if it was worth the time, but I was under the impression that it was not a flop ...

Why do people find it so hard to just get off the internet if they can't deal with harassment by themselves?

Prey was alright. Especially liked the intro scene, which was all ingame, similar to Half-life. Got a bit boring towards the end though.

I sure would like to see something "different", but the "different" games often end up being crap.
The main reason I'm skeptical about this rather than Bulletstorm or Brink or anything is because this is cursed by being a "sequel" to rather an old game series... the term "Cash Cow" instantly springs to mind.

To me this looks like prime territory for using a series/big name to cash in on an average game, exactly the same as Deus Ex 3 looks. Now, I'd love to be completely wrong, even more so in the case of DX3. But I have a funny feeling I won't be.
Just cos you want your game "edgy" and "different", doesn't mean the devs won't use exactly the same strategy for selling it to you as ActiBlizzard use for CoD, or EA use for MoH, FIFA, etc etc.
