At the risk of being hated on... who cares? It'll be nothing like as charming as the originals, it'll be released late and generally just not a good thing.
Due to its million-year hype though, everyone will probably get it out of some mis-placed sense of nostalgia, some of whom for a game series they've never even played, just heard a sound-board from.

Also part of me thinks this is still one big, long-running games industry in-joke and it still won't ever come out. Perhaps it's just a herald for whatever company is "developing" it going bankrupt.

No one has cared about it for about 10 years. It's the laughing stock of the game industry, and nothing they make will live up to expectations either. Not even sure why they've bothered.

Expect, exactly like Ben Croshaw suggests, a generic brown FPS shooter with hookers that is utterly forgettable...

I don't see how? What does having low expectations for gaming industries most famous failure has to do with complaining about COD 2010?

Basically DNF was a failed project and they are just dragging it along for the sake of the name. There are two options: either Gearbox will just patch what's there together, which means, the game will be in pretty much the state it should have been realeased in YEARS ago or Gearbox will restart the project yet again and in that case it might as well have a different name. Yet it's still called DNF, because it's a good IP.

The hype for the game ended a couple of year ago, if this comes out and it is actually good, of course I will buy and play it. But there are no expectations whatsoever now, because the most we could expect after years of broken promises is that the game actually gets released. If the game is any good is a whole different story.

And yes Tea, I get your point. TF2 was pretty much in the same situation, but there is a difference, which I find very important: Valve didn't fuck up the project and sold it to highest bidder. They reiterated until they liked it and actually managed to finish it. Can't say the same thing about 3D Realms, can we? Bottom line: if they are to keep the release date, there is not enough time to actually give the game their own touch for Gearbox. I'm guessing they will try and put the pieces together to resemble a complete package and that's about it.

Was the first duke nukem even good? I think I was a child at the time it came out, and even then I wasn't that impressed.

It was impressive in two major ways; the game engine allowed better 3d movement, water effects, and tons of environment changes (like things blowing up and lots of buttons activating changes in the level); this allowed much more freer exploration and level design then Doom. It was released the same year as Quake 1 for comparison! This was 3 years after Doom from 1993 too.

The design overall wasn't too bad if you ignore the gratuitous hooker stuff; enemies were varied (and fast paced), weapons were weird and wonderful (I wish someone would redo the shrink gun...and it had freezing well before BioShock), and it was pretty fun and easy to play and it was reasonably humorous (again ignoring hookers).

It certainly was of the Doom/Quake/Serious Sam era; no story, but as a part of it's time it was actually quite good. If they actually got their act together the company could have really, really put pressure on Id and later Epic and their FPS engine domination.

The stuff they released as screenshots for Forever looked like an overindulgant brown FPS mess though. Maybe Gearbox will make it more Borderlands-like (which itself is of that kind of style); but who knows until it is actually out.

And as Power said, this game's development history is very different from TF2's in a lot of ways.

Getting hooked in by the hype just because it's got Duke Nukem in the name is proper silly.
