Well, you can build a compass which points to your spawn, allowing you to mark the way with torches...
So, I tried this game today:
I walk around until I find a good spot, make some tools, build myself into the wall when the night comes and start mining.
During one alt-tab the game freezes on me, when I reload, I spawn INSIDE a block

When I respawn, I can't find my home and while I try to build a new one next to spawn, night comes in and one exploder and spiders attack me

So I say screw it, I'll generate a new world!
Next world I can't find coal. AT ALL. Until the night breaks in. Desperately trying to get a some, I mine like hell, without even noticing that the coal is next to a mob-spawner and two spiders gank me immediately. (Wooden pick-axe is not a good weapon).
So I decide to create a third world, in the hopes of getting some coal. And behold, I find some right at the beginning. I create a base and start mining into the mountain in the first night.
After mining for over an hour into the freaking mountain without break (you really only need to leave for wood/sticks and you get so much sticks out of a few trees it's ridiculous), I have found a handful of iron, a little flint, some coal, loads of that stuff that sometimes drops flint and enough stones to rebuild ancient rome.
Also, a stair so deep into the tunnel, you don't even get close to seeing from one end to the other.
I haven't found any fun though...
But tbh, I kind of expected that. I'm not the kind of guy who'd build a house in minecraft just for the sake of it, and if so, why not in the free build mode?
The only things you can create is stuff to mine better and kill stuff. But the former is self-defeating for me and the latter hasn't got much point either. The fighting system is boring (and not the point of the game, I know) and the rewards negligible.
In other words, there was never any doubt I wouldn't like this game but I still tried it. Why? I have no idea
