I decided to buy it - except I died, then got frustrated then decided to just keep digging down - I dug down as far as I could be bothered and hit an area of mud. I'm now stuck down there, and no way of getting out, no torches and no tools.

You can normally drop blocks under you and jump up. Like jump right click jump rightclick.

Once you build your enormous Castle of DoomTM make sure you include a boat entrance. Riding up a waterfall makes everything more awesome.
