Sweepstake time!

I have just got back from putting my car into the garage for the following:
- Massively blowing exhaust
The exhaust pipe has come out of the muffler
- Horn/Lighter Socket not working
Something is short circuiting the circuit that powers the horn and lighter socket - replacing the fuse doesn't solve the problem. I did ask them to fix this at the last MOT however it stopped working immediately afterwards.
- Full Service
I'd imagine this is going to be the killer. He estimated it would take about 2 or so hours + any time to fix anything else that's broken presumably. I need to put it in for a service though as I'm about to start my new job and this will be the first time I will have to rely on my car for getting me to and from work and it's going to have to last me a good while longer so would rather try and get things fixed now.

As far as I am aware - there are no other real issues with the car with the exception of perhaps slightly squeaky brakes and *occasionally* when it's wet it won't start first time.

The car is a Blue (because colour is important) 1.1l Peugeot 106, R Reg (1998) and it's done about 63,000 miles. The last time it was serviced was sometime before I bought it in November 07 when it had 47,500 miles on the clock. There were no advisories on the last MOT.

The garage is not a dealership, nor a large corporate chain. I have used them for my MOT and stuff a few times.

The Prize:
The person who guesses closest to the total amount (including VAT) will get to choose my gaming name for an entire week.

Rules:
- 1 Entry per person
- The winner will be announced after I have been raped by the garage - so I will be a little sore
- In the event of equal distance between amounts - rounding up always wins

Guesses:
Millicent - £287.38
r007 - £393.00
claws - £250.00
Hzza - £320.00
Nineblade - £197.60
Zarf - £180

I guestimate £287.38 (or the price of a second hand 106).  Found a 106 back exhaust box on the internet for £23 + VAT so that shouldn't be a killer even if they use proper Peugeot parts

I also have my car (a red P reg Mazda 323F) in the garage today to fix the brakes, a misfire and maybe an oil change and a quick search for a mysterious rattle.

New Exhaust: 125 € (estimate per here)
2.5h of Servicing/ Debugging the Circuitry @100€: 250€ (that's what I'd take if I were a machanic)
Small Parts: 50€ (rough estimate)
---
Total: 475€ = £393 (which is the most I'd pay...)
(all inc. VAT)

Going to Lowball it, assuming a trustworthy mechanic, £180.

I repaired my exhaust myself and did my own oil change when it was needed recently Smiley Mechanics are a rip off. My next challenge is replacing a bushing on my roll cage.

If you've got a dodgy mechanic it could easily be £300+ and even then they won't have done everything they say they have.
My housemates GF took her car in for MOT, it apparently needed £250 worth of work done, including replacing two steering bolts. When she got the car back they had really messed up her steering tracking which wore out the new set of tyres within two weeks. She took it to a trustworthy garage and they said it had rust and brake problems which should have never passed MOT, and there was no evidence of the steering bolts being replaced. The Mechanic there branded it a deathtrap.

Anti roll bar then - all I know is it is something to help prevent me dying if the car rolls and it makes an annoying rattle atm in my 206. Won't know more until either I buy a Haynes manual or my dad shows me what to do Smiley

You could try Autodata if you're willing to find it on the internet...

Actually autodata wouldn't be very useful in this situation.

Also I guess £500.

I'm in stats mode and know nowt about fixing cars, so I'm going to claim CV's guess as an outlier, take the average of the other 6 and guess 271.33 of your Great British Pound Sterling.
