It's more the timing that gets me than anything. I'm sure the kids benefit a lot from Child Play's work, but it seems rather insensitive to me to go fundraising for something a bit trivial when you could be making a much bigger difference with your money somewhere else in the world.
And the "reward" of a special Steam Group for donators... give me a break. Good lord, at least it's not a special hat.

That's a bit unfair. While I personally also think their target seems a little trivial (although I agree to claws' argument), both Child's play and the golden charity have been running for longer than the recent catastrophe.

I've always felt child's play is muddied with PA willy waving and it feels like gamers trying to hard, like see we're not evil we gave games to kids! Its a reasonably noble cause but why should all gaming related charity events give money to child's play, we could as gamers support other causes, like this golden wrench event could have been for Pakistan. Of course valve and PA are American and thus don't know of Pakistan's existence or problems.
Personally, I don't give a toss if its willy waving or not; it's doing good, who cares what the motivation behind it is as long as something decent comes out at the end of it? It's not like any of the money goes to PA themselves as far as I understand it, plus, if something as popular as PA can get more people involved in giving money to this specific charity then who's to say the donators won't go on and give to other charities as well?! I seriously don't understand the negativity towards PA/CP; if you don't agree with what they're doing then go out and organize something yourself and give the proceds to the charity of your choice. Stop knocking people for the charities they choose to give to or the things they do to raise money.

I never said it wasn't worth giving money to I was just agreeing with scroggage that I would like to see gamers supporting other charities in their events. That I so often see Child's play taking the lion's share of charity money from gaming-related charity turns me off those events.

There are plenty of children's charities just for starters like

I'm sure gamer contributions to these charities way already outnumber Child's Play - gamers are people too! But that doesn't mean there isn't meaningful role for CP as well. They can focus on games, toys, etc, more efficiently than the bigger charities. Of all the things to rail on charities for, this seems a rather unfair one.

I have my own issues with Child's play but I was not saying you should not donate to them. What I was mostly talking about was Hzza's happiness with gaming culture being perceived as good because we support child's play, I was just agreeing with scroggage that I would like gaming to publicly support many charities not just the one of their own making and agenda (although obviously it'll still be high on the list), for reasons of public perception, and getting money from these events to other charities. Also this thread needs to change tracks rerail/derail please.

...and I never said that you never said it wasn't worth giving them money Tongue My point was, if you don't like where the money goes then organize your own events; then you can send the money where ever you want.

Also, just seen your latest post, why wouldn't I be happy that something good that is being done by gamers is being advertised?! I HATE having people look at me funny when I tell them I play video games (and tbh, most people do) because the mainstream media has painted gaming so that in THEIR eyes my hobby involves me sitting in a dark room on my own, practicing killing people and plotting the next fucking Colombine Massacre! If more people knew about the community and the sub-culture that has evolved around gaming, maybe we wouldn't get such a bad rep, THATS what I'm happy about. More effort needs to go into promoting the GOOD things that come from gaming, rather then providing fuel for the tenuous links that are made back to video games when someone flips out and does something horrible.

Donated what I could to this earlier, I think Childs Play is a good cause. Even if the money isn't directly supporting peoples lives it doesn't mean it makes no difference. As long as it makes children in hospitals happier I'm glad to donate.

This.

If you don't like the charity - don't donate. If you think there are more worthy causes - donate to them instead.

That too^^

F@ck me children in need get the entire BBC for one night, cancer awareness gets loads of ribbons and what about commic and sport relief ..... People are moaning about 1 game that attracts only ~60,000 people to their charity which is a gamers charity anyway......

Give me a break.  All charities do good work, which one you give your money too is up to you.

I'm with Hz, egg & co on this one - Childs play is a niche charity focused on improving the lives of kids in hospitals through video games, there are plenty of other charities out there for pretty much every issue, If you are most concerned about helping with the Pakistani floods, donate to a charity for that. Simples.

You may as well be complaining that PETA should be telling people to spend their money on flood relief instead, humans are more important than animals, right?

Child's Play is such a ridiculous "charity". There's the worst flooding ever in Pakistan, and they're still solely concerned with providing videogames for kids?! Makes me hugely frustrated at the world we live in.

That's why I wouldn't buy a videogame but the Tomy Starlight Dreamshow (Pink) Tongue But you are right.. I think there will be a charity for the people who lost they loved ones at the love parade soon too.. ther are so many charities Sad I don't have enough money!

I would say it makes more sence not to spend money to Pakistan immediately. The most important thing they need at the moment is manpower e.g. Doctors and other emergency aid. Later they can use the money to rebuild, but at the moment it's not very useful.

Same thing happened in Haiti, they had money on mass but weren't able to use it, because there was still chaos on the streets and not enough helpers.
