Meh, despite Steam being massively superior as a backend publishers still haven't made integrating it a standard. Personally, Steam already provides all the functionality I want - decent chat system, both in and out of game, and the ability to see when my friends are playing and join them. Events are catered for as well. I don't want a facebook style wall, and I certainly don't want to be obligated to comment on peoples updates.

Well, I didn't say Steam needs those features, or that I even want them. But if they ever want to become something like facebook (IF they want), they need a lot more features. Offline-messages would be a nice start

Isn't steam community the facebook of gaming?
Steam doesn't even have the option to set a personal status, left alone something close to logging the previous status (stati?) or comment on what somebody else has done. Why can't I say nice job on unlocking achievement X? The "wall" really is a joke for that. Steam goes into the direction, but it's still far, far off. I don't think that will happen, the industry buzz is all about facebook integration, steam and b.net both have profiles with walls and stuff but they never get used in the same way.
While it might be easier to integrate with facebook, if you want to start monetizing you have to build your own stuff. Let's throw a view into the far future: The gamer-facebook is so popular, every gamer is registered on it. Every big new game integrates into it, most even use it for their backend friendslist etc. Not using the gamer-facebook is considered a defect by gamers. Now acti-blizz can charge for it. Maybe charge the users for premium features, or charge the game publisher for integration with the backend. No paying, no integration and no satisfied users. You can't do that if you integrate yourself with facebook. Then only facebook can charge you. gfwl is probably the most fully featured games social thing and charging for that was such an abysmal failure it had to go free

They started charging from the beginning (error #1), although many of the pay for features already existed for free (#2) and the software completely sucks (#3).

That reminds me of the good old days of CTRL+ALT+DEL, before he thought a serious miscarriage storyarch was a good idea for a funny comic.

For some reason people who make funny things end up with a perverse desire to make a serious thing. This phenomenom is most obvious in webcomics.

Games for Windows live is a Joke its main problem is that anyone who has used steam just laughs at it. Googles recent games portal announcement will put them and valve on a collision course and in the meantime the facebook and actiblizzrd games will roll on there own course.
So the real money will be in the app that combines all the above into one portal
As for privacy dumb move by actiblizz

? I can't find anything on that, but at a guess its probably a mobile games thing? One of the new features on iPhone 4 that google are actually behind on (they are winning in other areas) is the new iphone games service, i'd expect a google games portal to be a counter to the iphone one.

Android mobile apps etc and HTML5 for web browser is what i mean on google. They are all trying to get as far away from flash as possible these days.
