Will make another try later by resizing the SDD to the exact size of my current HDD partition, but I doubt that's the reason.
If that fails I will make a try with Acronis. I've downloaded the trial and AFAIK it's fully functional, only limited to 30 days. From what I've read True Image supports SSD Alignment.

I can recommend Paragon Partition Manager 11 - which you can get from:

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/

Some computer magazines have also given a free version away. You can also try a demo version which can do basic partition copy operations.

I've used it to copy and move partitions, and the drive backup feature allows you to boot from a specially prepared CD or DVD and restore a backup to a new drive.

I moved and resized my windows partition with this product - cheap and always worked for me. I've been using various versions for over 3 years now.

Acronis - everyone raves about it. I can't see why tbh. I bought version 10 ages ago and the bloody software wouldn't even boot from a CD or DVD. Was over £30 too.

On the topic of paragon, they used to do free product called paragon alignment tool which will fix your ssd partition alignment automagically if anything is wrong. Its good for USB flash drives too.

Acronis was good for doing incremental and differential backups from windows. I did have problems. Once I started using a raid array however as tghe restore cd doesn't seem to like raid arrays.

I have a suspicion what might go wrong with the restoration of the windows image.

I hate myself. When I run into that kind of problems I tend to dig and experiment until I find out what's wrong (or eventually surrender in frustration) even if there would be ways to achieve the same thing in a different way, perhaps even easier. It's not a bad character trait, but on occasion it's far from being effective.

EDIT:
nm, my suspicion wasn't confirmed, so I've decided to take the easy way out. Acronis True Image worked beautifully (for the record: The trial is functional for 30 days with only minor restrictions, e.g. no cloning), so right now I'm up and running again from my new SSD.

Sorry to keep pestering you ...

- One site recommended the following for SSD:
- Disable Defrag (but I assume that would mean disabling defrag as a whole, so all other drives would have to be defrag'ed manually)
- Disable Prefetch
- Disable Superfetch
- Disable Indexing

Consensus?

- Benchmarking:
Ran HDTune and got the following results

Code:
HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX2 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 113.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 205.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 157.2 MB/sec
Access Time           : 0.2 ms
Burst Rate            : 115.5 MB/sec
CPU Usage             : -1.0%

Not as impressive as the values Junta and Aquila posted :-/ Okay for an SDD running the OS?

- Is there a way to verify that TRIM is active?

If you run the windows performance test it'll disable degfrag on the ssd and set the other bits to how they should be. Generally leave superfetch etc enabled if you have plenty of ram - ram is still much faster than an ssd.
Performance wise it's probably fine. Run ATTO benchmark to see best case performance. Or as-ssd benchmark to see worst case performace

I was under the impression everybody knew better than Microsoft Tongue

BTW, on the topic of hardlinks etc:
While you can create junctions (hardlinks to folders) on other partitions hardlinks to files can only be created on the same partition (skimmed through the explanation, something with IDs only unique on the same partition). Bummer.

Ahh, bummer dude, best you move only folders then! An option for lowly played games is always to do a Steam Backup and remove the files after they're ready to reinstall at any time; I did that for all the SP Valve games.

like screwing up the restore in best Hzza tradition
Can I just point out that, apart from a RAID0 fail (which a) wasn't my fault and b) inevitable really) I haven't actually buggered anything up all that much, computer wise.

I may have got poo in my eye once and regularly take the tops of my knuckles of grating cheese, but I'm not the incompetent buffoon you all think I am.
I take back this comment; after having to move all 3 of my HDDs to fit in the stupidly big graphics card I broke a SATA cable which in turn borked my RAID1...Luckily its still bootable, but I need some tips on how to repair it.

I also need to buy a new sata cable...mock away Grin

If it's a RAID1, it'll be fine as soon as you plug a new SATA cable in and reconnect the mirrored drive. It'll have to rebuild though so do it when you can leave it overnight because it'll be very slow to use.
