i've heard of this before, i had a very interesting discussion with a philosophy student friend of mine not too long ago. But as the theory goes its anyone who is a Christian and as jesus was a jew he still doesn't count.

but this is to do with specific translations of the greek texts, when the original wording for saint means believer. if you take the dogmatic catholic tradition (which it seems we were) the saints all count and were cursing us from the heavens for our blasphemy

nope, its named after him but he was a jew until the end ('king of the jews' was hung round his neck on the cross) the catholic tradition and therefore the religion was started (traditionally) by the apostles after the death of jesus. specifically St Paul.

not quite, there is evidence of all sorts of denominations flying around during the first couple centuries AD. The romans DID steal the religion but with any faith back then (and still now) its formed through the filter of current beliefs. so the pagan birth and harvest festivals became easter and so on. Also with the official adoption of the religion for the state, the first council of Nicaea was called to bring all the cannon together. The romans pick and chose the best parts of the story for themselves. Thats is why the bible has only the 4 gospels in the new testament. All the other parts either were contradictory or said something unflattering about certain parts of society.

the king of the jews thing was a bit of a jab at jesus but also all his people, the phrase "King of the Jews" had a lot of connotations back then, remember that though herod was the ruler of the kingdom of judah; they weren't the kings as the kingdom was destroyed by the romans a generation before (destruction of the first temple of soloman). so by killing their king the romans were trying to piss off the jews and show their dominion of their people (like there were again a slave race)

also the term "king of the jews" was used by the jewish people to refer to a prophetical messiah they were waiting for. To refer to one's self as the true messiah was blasphemous and likely to get you sent to hell. thats why in the story the jewish leaders wanted jesus dead.

just one more thing Nietzsche was wrong about. how can you have faith when you are presented with empirical proof. When you know something for a fact you don't believe it, you know it.

faith isn't blind but it requires a certain jump in belief. it might sound like utter rubbish but the theology says that to know isn't enough, you must believe in the "truth".

in fact the original context of the greek translation for the term faith could mean both fidelity or faithfulness, to continue to believe in the face of contradictorily evidence. how is that possible for a bunch of guys who planned on giving up their "Saviour" and had the be persuaded of their mistake by miracles.

also before we get too into philosophic debate, i'd like you to know i'm not a believer despite knowing this stuff.
