For a new years resolution I had a plan of actually using my passport and traveling out side of the UK for the first time ever. And I thought that actually visiting the places my home town is twinned with would be a good start.

So for Gloucester thats Gouda in Nederlands, Trier in Germany and Metz in France. And I figured that I should also stop in on the Huff village at Hartenfels Germany, as I do still have dreams of building my own home (or at least getting some one else to do it).

So 4 different places, 3 different countrys. And I've no idear how to plan for such a thing.

One of the first plans is to take a chunk of time off work and drive there. One of the first supprises was the cost difference between a ferry and the tunnel. About £30 for the ferry and over £100 for the tunnel. It's also about 1,400 miles for the full trip. So that will be a bit of fuel used. So trying to cost it out is begining to make me think if this is such a good idear.

Another idear was then to split it it up into separate journes and take the train. So get into London and take the Eurostar. Again I'll have to cost it out and see how feasable this hair brained plan of mine is.

Basically how would you go about it?

I can only speak for Germany. I've been to Trier quite often a couple of years ago and it's an interesting city actually, with some remains of the roman times for you to visit and a river, where you are not allowed to swim in. I think it's well worth a visit, if you're visiting from another country.

Well I guess the most costly thing is to get off that island of yours. Wink Traveling within the EU borders shouldn't be much of a problem if you go by car, but it might be a bit weird, as we all are driving on the wrong sides of the street.

Is there actually a tunnel between mainland and the lonely islands of britain (that's the official name for it, I believe?)? If you are to stay at one place for a night, the cost might vary between 25€ and %a lot of money% in germany. Around 60€ for a 3 star hotel for the night, I think. Sleeping under a bridge is free of charge, but frowned upon. Make sure you get a map of the area around the city, there are some cool castle ruins scattered around and you are also very likely to find a lot of wine cellars with own wine production and shit.

Don't remember anything else and I wasn't really visiting Trier for the pretty sights.

Have you had a look at getting an interrail ticket? Basically they allow you to travel for say 10 days out of 15, anywhere in europe. It's what a lot of backpackers do when they go to europe and you can use it in most countries. Book a really cheap flight to somewhere in europe and go from there!

The site is here: http://www.interrail.net

I'd personally drive, gives you far more freedom but then I have done quite a bit of driving about Europe.  Just don't forget you're driving on the right.

I'd also recommend a trip to the Nuremburgring and take a drive round.

Excellent. I'd much prefer to drive to these places. Purely for the fact that I can stop when ever i want and go and look at stuff that's caught my attention. Where as if I take the train I don't have the hassle of driving, but I don't get to stop as when I want to go and take a close look at stuff.

The time factor is flexable. I'm not sure on how long to spend at the different places. May be a couple of days at each. Erm, I kinda think may be getting to Antwerpen and spending a night, then going over to Gouda. Spend a day there. Get some cheese for HeX. Then leave for Hartenfels the next day. Sleep the night. Look around the Huff village. Then go to Trier. Spend two days there looking around. Then leave for Metz. Spend a couple of days there (already had a look about the place on street view). Then drive back through the Champain region. Get on the ferry. Drive home. Spend a day or two relaxing and then back to work with the feeling of achomplishment.

So may be 9 days in total. It's the ballence of things. I don't want to rush through the trip. It is supposed to be a holiday after all. But then again the longer I spend bimbeling about, the more it will cost me. Where's that lotto jackpot win when you need it?

Hire Farrari F430 Spider, take a blitz around Nuremburg. Scare my self silly in the process Cheesy

Warning, do not confuse the City of Nuremberg and the Nurburg Ring (Nürnberg and Nürburgring in german), those are HOURS apart. If I remember correctly, Nürburgring is closer to Trier, should be about two hours of driving, but getting there might be a bit tricky, depending if you are going over the Autobahn (easier and faster) or over Landstraße (longer, windier, but pretty fun as you pass several small towns between some hills and shit). Beware, the Landstraße route is very very highly populated by bikers during the sommer months.

Like the idear of the landstrasa roads. I think I'd better get a sat-nav for europe. And may be a bowler hat.

You can hire a Susuki Swift (don't laugh) to drive round the 'ring with an instructor.  Probably worth every penny.  Also check the circuit is open on the day you are going there, a lot of manufacturers test there.

I would also recommend the scenic routes (no pun intended) It may be an idea to find out the "right" scenic routes though, try bikers web sites for interesting routes.  Motorways are pretty much motorways the world over (except where they are de-restricted).
