I applaud Fiona Mactaggart for giving the most comprehensive response from all the MP contact posted here.

Including the Hansard record as well.. spot on.

i see where shes coming from, I just loled at the mums running micro businesses. Although to be fair I guess she picked the simplest example for the average person on the street. I guess I was expecting some of the more technical issues that completely shut this down from actually affecting real pirates.

although I don't agree with any limiting of a private service, copyright infringement should be a matter for the civil courts. I would have thought a policy of speed limiting would be a fairer compromise. Reducing a connection to say 0.5meg for 6months would prevent major downloading while still allowing basic Internet use.

On the plus side the 50p a month landline tax has been posponed. Like roadtax you know it would just end up in the already vast general tax pot, instead of being used for what it was intended for.

i support the landline tax if it gets spent on modern telephone infrastructure. As Fiona tried to point out though copyright law is meant to stop other people profiting from your work, it was never meant to stop the spread of your work as a cultural phenomenon at the expense of other peoples resources. I think I'd be more outraged about the digital economy bill if I didn't hold current uses of copyright law as unethical and illegal. Can't remember if i'm repeating myself but I will only be happy once copyright law has been fixed and that makes this all moot, although admittedly the chances of it happening are tiny

The example given was just a shadow of what could have been said- my university library offers free wifi to those with a university login (actually, this applies to any public place with free access), so what if I wander in and cheerfully pirate things while writing an essay? Are they going to make the uni as the ISP shut down their own internet?

Our uni already disconnects you for repeated complaints from copyright holders, in that case it actually changes nothing here at liverpool at least.

You only actually get complaints though if you pirate something like a film currently in a cinema. I think at the end of the day the copyright holders that want this are probably aware that they have limited resources for monitoring this stuff and are just going to hound people pirating the latest releases, and iuno that doesn't massively bother me I wish they'd just admit they don't give a damn about anything older thats not worth their time monitoring and start fixing copyright law.

They do give a damn about it, it's just the lowest hanging fruit first. I agree re copyright law, perhaps our only hope is when the downloading kids become MP's...ah what the heck, they'll have been 'corrected' by then...

I'm not sure but one of my flat mates in year 1 was caught and given a suspension (you get like warning, suspension, cut off). He was downloading something that was in the cinema at the time. I on the other was rinsing all sorts of things but never anything new and didn't hear a peep. I imagine its something along the lines of they join a torrent harvest the peer list and contact the uni with the ip and hardware mac address, the uni then finds out what account/residential user this belongs to and issues them a warning. Considering that everyone at uni does it, everyone on my floor, everyone I knew, also the law students for delicious lols, I'm surprised the amount of complaints they actually get is so small. If anything I think this just shows how impossible it is for copyright holders to monitor the entire internet and they instead focus on what holds the highest value.

The fact the law students do it too though, iuno I have some hope that they'll fix it when they grow up. Then again david cameron has smoked weed, bragged about it, and still considers anyone who does so a criminal...

Rewatching it hes perhaps more moderate than my reduce copyright to a patent type thing but perhaps the most realistic solution

just encrypt your connection then. i'm more concerned about the governments power to have websites blocked but i'm not sure if thats even possible given that you could proxy around it most likely.
